Tujia People 土家族 ((means people from the land in Chinese), with a total population of over 8 million, is the 6th largest ethnic minority in People's Republic of China. They live in Wuling Mountains 武陵山脉, straddling the common borders of Hunan, Hubei and Guizhou Provinces, and Chongqing Municipality. There are numerous autonomous region within their area of resident. The Tujia may trace their history back over twelve centuries Ba people 巴 who occupied the area around modern-day Chongqing some 2,500 years ago. The Ba Kingdom 巴國 reached the zenith of its power between 600 BC and 400 BC but was destroyed by the Qin in 316 BC.

Traditional Tujia customs can only be found in the most remote areas today. The Tujia are renowned for their singing and song composing abilities and for their tradition of the Baishoy Dance 摆手舞, as well as brocade knitting skills. Most of the Tujia worship white tiger totems and other animistic believes. They speak an isolated Tibeto-Burman language but the numbers are dwindling and most young generations prefer Chinese even among themselves.
