The Great Wall in Shanxi 山西長城 relics can be found in over 40 counties in nine cities in Shanxi Province and this section was always serving as the barrier to protect Beijing in ancient times. The wall was built along the contour of the Taihang Mountain Range that blocked the enemies from reaching the plain in Beijing proper. The overall length in Shanxi is over 3,500 km (2,145 miles).

Guguan Shanxi 谷关 located about 35 km Yangquan City 阳泉市 in Shanxi Province, and about 15 km to Niangzi Pass 娘子关, Guguan Pass Great Wall is strategically situated and difficult of access. Together with the famous Niangzi and Jiuguan Passes, it is an important fortified place in Chinese dynasties.

Guguan Pass Great Wall is the only complete ancient wall built of stone which is still extant in China. It was first built in Zhongshan State in Spring and Autumn Periods (770 BC - 476 BC), about 155 years before the Great Wall in Qin Dynasty (221 BC - 206 BC) and reconstructed in Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). It was one of the four famous passes to the west of Beijing in Ming Dynasty (the other three were Juyongguan 居庸关, Zijingguan 紫荆关 and Daomaguan 倒马关).

The Guguan Pass Great Wall was first repaired in October, 1998 by the villagers living at the foot of the wall. They are said to be the descendents of the soldiers who once guarded the pass. Could not bear to see the wall built by their forefathers left eroded, they decided to raise funds to reconstruct the wall.

Just out of curiosity, What is the upkeep cost of a structure as old as the wall? Does China get acid raid due to the pollution from thermal power generation plants? This, I asked because we in North America have experienced in the past but the pollution is under control due to dismantling of thermal power plants in the Province of Ontario, Canada.

Thanks once again for your contribution to showcase China on this forum.

From this section of the wall westward most of the Great Wall was either decayed of buried due to neglects and time elements so there's no costs to speak of. Most of the sections, east or west of Guguan, that were rebuilt and renovated as tourist attractions, are mostly money cows. Of course anything that built with concretes requires minimal maintenance.

Acid rain on stone and brick structures? LOL you worry too much!

Winter Clothes Show Times have Changed
2013-01-04 12:02:17 China Daily Web Editor: Yangyang
Winter fashion trends have changed over the years as people's material well-being has improved. In the 1970s in the less developed areas of China joining the military was a good career choice for young people, and the green overcoats worn by soldiers during the winter came to symbolize a better future for many. They were also practical, keeping their wearers warm when they were out in the cold and serving as a quilt when necessary.

Niangziguan 娘子关 is a mountain pass west of Shijiazhuang, capital of Hebei Province in North China. One of the major passages from Shanxi Province to Hebei Province across the Taihang Mountain. Surrounded by a maze of hills and valleys, Niangziguan Pass was famed as "the Ninth Pass on the Great wall". The extant pass was built in 1542 during the Ming Dynasty. The pass is flanked by hills more than l,000 metres high with the Tao River, twists its way through the valleys below. In ancient times this provided a narrow passage for men and horses. Story went Princess Pingyang of the first Tang Emperor was once garrisoned here, here the name.

It was near here around Xizhou 忻州, the 8th route Army led by Lin Biao and separately the KMT's National Revolution Army, fought more than 22 battles with the Japanese Imperial Army during the 2nd Sino-Japanese War and managed to kill more than 20,000 Japanese soldiers.

Taihang Shan Mountains 太行山 works as a natural barrier, blocking Beijing Proper from the West, with sporadic valleys in between. Hence the many guans in Shanxi act in that purpose alone
