Air India, PIA are not alone in their troubles. The list of troubled airlines is long.

I am sorry to say if the Emirates took the training from PIA in all matters they would be in the dumps. Emirates is backed by UAE which wants to make Dubai the regional hub.

Emirates airline is a not private public traded corporation. They benefit from deep pockets of the royal family. You cannot compare it to Singapore Airlines or Cathay Pacific.

I wonder why, they keep taking loans from banks. Look up Citibank, and HSBC's exposure, and how much financing they do for EK. There are other banks, but you can start with these two.

Any smart executive who cares about his reputation and career would not join Air India or PIA. Air India cannot pay a foreign executive in millions of dollars while a lot of support staff makes pennies. It does not work in a democracy like India. It will be exploited by airline employee unions. It does not work in a country with history of colonial rule.

Nobody pays millions of dollars. If you are going to import someone from Europe or the US, it is obvious you will have to them in their currency, or equivalent thereof. If you throw peanuts, you get monkeys.

As to the German, it was not like he wasn't aware of the corruption in PIA, unless he was living on Mars. He might have thought "is ganga main, hum bhi haath dholaytay hain." Unfortunately, THAT did not go well, as expected.

All the major American airlines are well run. You can fly from one end of the country to the other corner for $300.
The safety records are best in the world. Some of them faced financial problems because of intense competition.

I have flown with United, American, PanAm, Eastern, Delta, Jet Blue and Southwest, to name just a few. They don't even come near their European counterparts. Absolute crap!

Just to give your safety comment a rest - I once got dropped at the wrong airport. How in the world do you mess up an airport, is beyond me. Whole bloody 737, at the wrong airport! That was fun!

Air India is a mess. It is like another government run company.
government run companies do not work in India. it is a cultural problem.
Why don't you look at the private Indian airlines ? that is the future.

so yes this is hopefully the final nail in PIA's coffin.

Do look into why Air India had to sell one of the most fuel efficient aircrafts in the history of aviation - the 777. As an aviation enthusiast, I was saddened that Air India was disposing of these a/c's, but not surprised.

Air India is a useless mismanaged complete POS. The best Indian airline was Kingfisher.

Air India could hire 10 BA executives it would never been 1/100th any GCC airline. I think, and this is just my opinion, AI is so crappy because there is no fear of failure. AI can run a huge debt and the government will bail them out. Their massive union means they can (and do) massively overhire and no one is there to stop them. The selling of AI's best planes is a natural consequence of the this.

I do not know which airline you flew in. I have flown 200 times in USA. I never had any issues.

There appears to be a problem with me as I am unable to reconcile the numbers. Another thread in the same section & the Dawn states that annual PIA losses were Rs 45-billion during last fiscal year.

Where the figure of $4-billion (Rs 400-billion) comes from? This is nearly 10 times the figure mentioned in ‘Dawn’. Does this represent losses over the last 10 years?

Their directors spend billions on foreign tours in an year. The level of mismanagement in PIA is truly world-class. I have interned there when I was a student and seen the abysmal state of this airline. It really is pathetic.

Right, plus you have employees who have left yrs ago, but still get free tickets for the whole bloody family, anywhere in the world.

Do you know that during lunch or dinner, the PIA staff actually makes surplus food so that the employees can take it home, to their family? They aren't supposed to, they aren't some laborer working on PKR 12,000- 15,000 a month to resort to such things. These guys buy spares for the aircraft, even though they already have them, in their stock. They discard usable hardware to the scrap, when the time for audit comes. Forget their staff-to-aircraft ratio, its the worst in the world.

PIA was a very interesting place, there were extremely capable people who want to work, then again there were countless political appointments of people, who were only there to make illegal money. I believe that the situation has only gotten worse.
