PIA’s acting CEO removed

KARACHI: The acting chief executive officer of the Pakistan International Airlines, Bernd Hildenbrand, has been relieved of his charge and the airline’s chief financial officer Nayyar Hayat has been given the charge of acting CEO, it is learnt here reliably.

According to highly placed sources, Mr Hildenbrand, a German national, is facing various charges relating to misuse of authority, causing losses to the airline, selling of its aircraft at a low price without following laid down procedures, etc, and different investigation agencies, including the Federal Investigation Agency, are probing the charges. His name has already been put on the Exit Control List.

The sources said the letter relieving him of the charge had been issued late Thursday night. Though the letter showed the name of PIA human resources chief Raheel Ahmed, it was signed for him by his subordinate Zafar Ali.

According to the sources, the personal order No 013/2017 (organisational announcement) issued by the human resource department says: “Mr Bernd Hildenbrand, P–67589, Chief Operating Officer, is hereby relieved from the assignment of acting chief executive officer.

“Mr Nayyar Hayat, P– 64717, chief financial officer, will continue as acting CEO till further orders.”

He alone is not responsible. We all know how much political influence is involved in PIA

. . .
I think this is general problem in PIA , too much pulling the legs phenomenon , and spread of corporate data into News papers hand and other entities.

Every one is pulling each other's legs

If you have a JUNK plane that needs to be JUNKED , yet people rather see it standing on corner of airport then JUNKED and money made so it can be reported as income on Financial balance

Lot of positives during German CEO time , I loved the idea of Premiere service it was first time in so many years I found PIA actually did something right

Ab Gober khane ki Adat per jai , to Fancy service buri lagti hai

All these issues are not debatable , CEO/Directors were choosen to make tough decision now let them free for 4-5 years and make them accountable for only Profits

These are all TABLIOD headlines in Pakistani Newspapers
When someone does not buys planes ------> Koi plane nahi khareed raha
When some one does buys planes ----------> Plane is too expensive
When plane has defect -----------------------> Plane does not need servicing corruption hai
When plane crashes ---------------------------> Fix kiyon nahi kiya , corruption hai
When plane leased ----------------------------> Lease kiyon ki , worker need salary
When plane not leased-------------------------> People waiting for service on airport
Flight late hai -----------------------------------> Pilots are having a protest on runway
When worker salary paid------------------------> The money can be used to buy planes

Ultimately the problem with PIA is workers and employees leaking , corporte data to news papers and political entities and the issues becoming politicized.

Any attempt to sell JUNK assets (planes , old furniture , old computers, old carpet) it all becomes a political tool to pull down any CEO

BTW Who fires or for that matter hires a CEO in an organisation

A Junior HR using letterhead of Chief HR

OR

Board of Directors through voting :D

.
Normally the "SHAREHOLDERS" have authority to fire a CEO , HR managers don't necessarily have the right

SHAREHOLDER MEETING -> VOTE COUNT -> Directors do paperwork with HR

And if the board resolution is missing along with the letter of termination ????

as appears in this case ( since nothing is mentioned in this regard )

I wonder what is the legal status of the German CEO, should he accept the termination letter as final or Fire the subordinate for singing such letter :D:D

.
I think he won't be signing the letter anytime soon , and instead the HR guys will be going home

Strangely in Western corporations I hear news of asset sale all time
example: Company sold off 200 million worth of realestate to reduce debt etc very normal

Here's the linkedin for Bernd Hildenbrand.

https://www.linkedin.com/in/bernd-hildenbrand-47332780/?ppe=1

~23+ Years with Lufthansa, which isn't some bullsh!t 3rd rate airline but one that operates in one of the most competitive markets.

The HR can present the evidence of corruption, i'm sure the Supreme Court will decided 3-2 of needing a JIT.

Any bakwas against Bernd will be meet with a response from Germany.

Which system and procedure he did not followed, if the system was correct PIA would not have been in this condition

‘Corruption accused’ replaces tainted PIA CEO

LAHORE - PIA has replaced a corruption-accused Chief Executive Officer (CEO) with another officer who too is facing a corruption inquiry, airline sources have claimed.

Nayyar Hayat, who is allegedly involved in heavy embezzlement of funds, has been given the additional charge of CEO after removal of Bernd Hildenbrand – who is being investigated by FIA on corruption charges.

As per the announcement, Chief Operating Officer Hildenbrand was relieved from the assignment of Acting CEO and Nayyar has been given this slot till further orders.

Well-placed sources in national carrier said that Nayyar Hayat is accused of misuse of Rs3 billion from Provident Fund and he was therefore removed from the office of Chief Financial Officer (CFO) last year on the recommendation of PIA Board of Directors.

Interestingly, after his removal as CFO, he was posted as director of Hotel Airport - which is a property of PIA.

The BoD had taken the action against Nayyar after Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP) issued a warning to the PIA BoD over the funds embezzlement issue.

An inquiry into this effect is still underway, a senior PIA officer said, seeking anonymity. He said that due to the embezzlement in provident fund, pensioners and retired airline officers had to face problems in getting pensions.

Also, the said office was posted CFO despite the fact that this post could only be filled by a charted accountant (CA), a qualification that he did not have, a PIA officer said.

Sources said that another loss caused by Nayyar to the airline was increment in salaries of pilots beyond the recommendations of the BoD. These increments put an extra burden of Rs6 to 8 billion on PIA since the airline management had to award the same increments to engineers also.

As for Bernd Hildenbrand, the highly-paid outgoing CEO is a mega corruption probe by the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA). The authorities have also barred the German national from leaving the country till completion of the probe.

The federal investigators are probing into a case wherein PIA top officials leased an aircraft from Sri Lankan airline on almost double rates than a private airline of the country. PIA leased an aircraft A-330 from Sri Lankan airline at $8500 per hour whereas the same type of aircraft was got on lease by a private airline on $4500 per hour.

Couple of weeks back FIA Punjab had sought permission from its headquarters to interrogate some senior PIA officers allegedly involved in corruption. In response to that, the FIA DG granted permission.

The FIA is probing the wet lease of an aircraft A-330 on exorbitant rates. The above said inquiry was started on special directions of Interior Minister Ch Nisar Ali Khan.

PIA spokesman Danyal Gillani said that there was no inquiry underway against newly appointed Acting CEO in connection with embezzlement of Provident Funds.

To a question about the CA mandatory qualification for the post of CFO he said that it was not mandatory and Mr Nayyar was serving as CFO since long. About increments of pilot salaries, he said that it was given with the approval of BoD and Nayyar was not CFO at that time
