PIA sacks 74 more employees

Spokesperson says 41 employees fired in June, 62 in July as part of accountability process

The accountability process in the Pakistan International Airlines has started to gain momentum as 74 more employees were sacked due to fake degrees, poor performance, drug smuggling and theft of government record in August alone.

According to the PIA administration, with the fresh layoffs, the total number of employees dismissed from jobs during the last three months has reached 177.

According to figures released by the PIA Human Resource Department, 74 employees were fired for fake education certificates, negligence of duty, damage to property, bribery, smuggling and drug use.

According to the break-up, 27 employees were sacked for .fake degrees, 31 for unauthorised measures, six for violation of standard operating procedures, four for damage to property of the institution, one for involvement in drug trafficking, three for stealing government records and two for illegal activities.

The PIA spokesperson said that four employees were demoted while 11 others were also given various disciplinary punishments.

“At the same time, 17 employees were given certificates of appreciation for high performance and five were also given cash prizes.”

The spokesperson said that 41 employees were fired in June and 62 in July.

“The accountability process in PIA is being brought to a logical conclusion as soon as possible so that the institution can be cleansed of black sheep,” he said, adding that long-delayed inquiries and investigations were being completed soon.

“Negligence and criminal elements have no place in the PIA and action against them is a key part of the PIA reform process.”

PIA Fires 54 Employees for Fake Credentials, Bribery, Smuggling & Other Charges

54 PIA employees were found to be involved in submitting fake credentials, bribery, smuggling, and indulging in narcotics and theft of government records and hence have been relieved of their duties.
The national flag carrier took action against the employees after committee reports found them guilty on the above-mentioned charges.

PIA’s spokesperson said that the charges against them were proven after thorough inquires and committee reports. He said that further investigations are taking place within the organization.
According to the spokesperson, seven employees were dismissed for tampered documents, eight for prolonged unauthorized absence, two for taking bribes from customers/contractors, four for being involved in illegal and immoral acts of omission, one for indulging in alcohol and narcotics.

Moreover, five employees were given the penalty of withholding increment for disorderly and indecent behavior, nine awarded with a reduction to lower pay scale for insubordination and another employee was served with censure notice for sleeping on duty.

Furthermore, two employees were dismissed on the charges of theft and destruction of the official records, one was shown the door for smuggling, another demoted for disobedience, and refusing to carry out a lawful order.

On the other hand, 13 employees were awarded appreciation letters for their commitment and dedication, and seven others were given monetary awards for working extra hours.
PIA management said that it is important for any organization to maintain discipline and harmony between the employees. Therefore, hard-working and committed employees must be appreciated, while those found guilty must suffer the punishment.

As part of its in-house accountability process, the PIA has sacked 29 more employees on different charges including having fake educational credentials, dereliction of duty, smuggling and theft of official record.
The number of workers of the national carrier fired in the last four months has reached 206 with the fresh layoffs as the airline is moving ahead with its reforms.
According the PIA human resource department, the airline had initiated action against 54 employees and carried out an in-depth investigation. During the process, 29 of them were found guilty of indulging in illegal practices and sacked while 25 handed down different punishments.
Seven employees were fired for possessing fake degrees, eight for remaining absent from duty without notice and two for damaging property owned by the national flag carrier.
Similarly, six employees were sacked over charges of corruption, two for their involvement in smuggling narcotics and one for leaking classified information.
In addition, two employees were sacked for stealing official data and five for not following the standard operating procedures.
A PIA spokesperson said nine employees were demoted for not following instructions and 10 were cleared after an inquiry.
He added that 13 PIA employees were awarded certificates for their outstanding performance and seven given cash prizes.

The national carrier had sacked 17 pilots in July for having 'dubious' flying licences on the order of the federal cabinet. They included 12 captains and five first officers. Last month, the federal cabinet approved the revocation of the licences of 22 more pilots. In addition, the cabinet was informed that the Civil Aviation Authority was considering suspending the licences of 32 other pilots for the next 12 months.
The sacking followed startling revelations by Aviation Minister Ghulam Sarwar Khan.
In June, Ghulam Sarwar Khan had told parliament that 262 pilots of the total 860 in the country had "suspicious flying licences" and would be grounded immediately. Later, PIA announced that it would ground a third of its 434 pilots.
Sarwar said criminal proceedings would also be initiated against pilots with the alleged fake licences as the government could not allow anyone to put the lives of its citizens at risk. However, the Pakistan Airline Pilots' Association rejected the government's list of pilots with licences deemed dubious, saying that it was full of discrepancies.
