The airline is aiming to expand the fleet to 25 aircraft in coming months, making it the largest ever private carrier in the country.

KARACHI: Speculation related to the fate of Shaheen Air International (SAI), after its founder Khalid M Sehbai passed away earlier this year, was put to rest on Wednesday evening when his sons formally came forward to take over the management of the company.

SAI Chairman Kashif Sehbai (34) and his younger brother Ehsan Khalid Sehbai (31) as CEO announced they will continue to pursue the expansion policy of their father.

“Shaheen has no other intention but to grow,” said Kashif, speaking at a welcoming ceremony organised by Bukhari Group Chairman Rafiq Khan Bukhari. “We have relocated here (from Canada) to try and consolidate the business.”

Since Khalid M Sehbai bought a majority stake in the private carrier, which was once run by the air force, it has seen many ups and downs, even coming close to suspending operations.

Following his death in July, the market was ripe with rumours that his family will sell the stake to new investors, possibly to the Tabbani Group which used to own Aero Asia.

However, in the last few years the airline has emerged as the fastest growing in the country with a fleet of 18 aircraft and threatens to take more market share from the crisis-hit Pakistan International Airlines (PIA).

For the first time since starting operations in 1993, Shaheen crossed the million-customer mark in fiscal year 2012-13 as it carried 1.061 million passengers between Pakistani cities and foreign destinations, according to Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) data.

It saw phenomenal growth in its share. Compared to 2011-12, Shaheen transported 43.8% more international travellers in 2012-13 whereas there was only a marginal increase of 3% in the overall number of passengers travelling abroad. In 2007-08, Shaheen carried just 280,615 passengers on international routes.

Altogether, the international traffic from Pakistan was 9.5 million in 2012-13 against 9.2 million a year before.

“We are well versed with the airline’s affairs. We were never blind to what was happening in the airline,” assured Kashif.

The airline is aiming to expand the fleet to 25 aircraft in coming months, making it the largest ever private carrier in the country and just few aircraft short of PIA.

I will not fly with airblue any more... who owns shaheen air?

Yar whatever happens I trust PIA over any other dingbat Pakistani carrier, I once had the "pleasure" of meeting the owner of Bhoja Airlines, and he spent the whole half hour mocking PIA, allah barey bol sey Maf karey. Three days later BA213 crashed.

Yes PIA has lost a lot of it's lacquer but it is still our national carrier and better than nothing.

I talked to a friend who is travel agent. He told me if not all most of Air Blue flights are on time but PIA flights are delyed. Guess who is owner of Air Blue ? Minister of Petroleum Shahid khaqan Abbasi who is also owner of Air Blue.

Yesterday flight to Islamabad from Oslo was on time but did a stop in Italy before going to Islamabad :hitwall: Another family who traveled by PIA told toilets smelled like hell. I remember last time i traveled with PIA it was same.
Firstly, aircrafts do not fly on petrol. Secondly, fuel shortage or not, PIA is mostly late.

I fail to see a connection between present petroleum crisis and delayed PIA flights.

what the hell is wrong with you. This thread is about PIA and airblue. Now is 2015 and you post a 2013 article?

Get a job if you have nothing better to do than post useless posts to derail topic.

PTI followers will see connection between anything ;)

Also just because fuel is cheaper, it doesn't mean PIA will fly more (in the case of public cars). Their demand will not change much.

PIA has to meet international rules (European and American), unlike other airlines with middle east. Thus, they're FAR more safer than PIA. Also Shaheen flies 737-400, whereas PIA has dropped 737-300. The best thing to do is avoid the b747 (rarely flies) and maybe a310 (safer than 737-400 though).

Also Shaheen's a330 are some 20 year old planes.

PIA flights were never delayed before this crisis, infact the word on-time actually refers to PIA's punctuality.
chutia is what chutia does, nothing more nothing less, and this wall hitting is not helping either

Nobody is derailing the topic. Ottoman asked about the owners of Shaheen Air. My friends in Canada personally knew Sehbai brothers when they lived in Canada. So I posted about these young duo entrepenurs that have made Shaheen a money maker.

A CEO of a private airline is a member of the assembly and also petroleum minister. This is called conflict of interest which nooras will never understand and will forever live in misery.

He established his private airline when he became chairman PIA. How do these people use their positions of influence to enrich themselves? They abuse and use the position they owe to the people. But the fans of PMLN and PPP, idiots as they are, will never understand.

This petroleum crisis is because of mismanagement and mala fide intentions. And this is 'experienced' political party which were told has a very capable team as well!

.
I agree, also as per ARY talk show Ander-ki-baat; this is all staged so that Pakistan Petroleum will be shown as going in "khasaara" and will be given to the nearest and dearest or the one give the highest commission...
