RAF jets scrambled after incident

RAF Typhoon jets have been launched to investigate an incident involving a civilian aircraft within UK airspace, the Ministry of Defence has said.

A Pakistan International Airlines plane has been diverted from Manchester to Stansted Airport, a Manchester Airport spokesman said.

An Essex Police spokeswoman added: "An incident has occurred on an aircraft. Police and partners are responding."

The BBC understands that the plane has now landed in Stansted.

The plane reportedly left Lahore at 09:35 local time. It was due in at Manchester at 1400 BST.

Separate incident- that one involved a British Airlines flight.

UPDATE- PIA flight has landed at Standstead- armed police are on the ground.

Plane was due in Manchester, Heathrow is in London.

Nope 2 things- 1) the BA incident was at HEATHROW- this flight was from Lahore to Manchester airport (has no been diverted to Stanstead though) and 2) runway 2 at Heathrow has now re-opened.

Yeah - i mixed two :undecided:

So, any update about reason?

Kuch nahi hua hoga... pilot daru pee ke tunn hoga..aur ATC ko respond nshi kiya hoga.... so they triggered precautionary protocol .

What about co-pilot? Flight Engineer? If everyone was drunk then who landed the plane?

UPDATE- plane was on final apporach to Manchester airport before diverting to Stanstead. No reason given as of yet but an ex RAF officer on the news just said that this could be because Stanstead is a "Hijack airport" ie it is more secure and has better infrastructure to deal with such incidents.

A BBC reporter on the radio in Islamabad said that the security at Lahore airport isn't up to international standards.
