An Indian PM visiting the country after 26 years. Purpose: renewal of ties and building both land and waterway to ASEAN.
Why Myanmar is important to India?
1) Hydrocarbon deposits
2) We are building roads, railways and ports there.
3) Helped to uproot many militant bases inside their border
4) Less restrictions by the military govt.
5) Emergence of democracy and Suu Kyi
6) Way to South East Asia.
7) Reduce Chinese influence more and more. India did a mistake by vacating the place for China in Myanmar, but now their relationship is not as good as earlier and this is our chance. I think India was instrumental in removal of sanctions by US and EU.
