Philippines, Vietnam discuss Spratlys claim

Jerry E. Esplanada

The Philippines and Vietnam on Monday discussed “cooperative actions” in the West Philippine Sea (South China Sea) during the inaugural meeting of the two countries’ Joint Commission on Maritime and Ocean Cooperation (JCMOC), according to the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA).

Among issues taken up at the first JCMOC meeting were Manila’s proposal for the establishment of a Zone of Peace, Freedom, Friendship and Cooperation in the disputed sea, as well as a Code of Conduct for Spratlys claimant-countries, the DFA said.

Aside from the Philippines and Vietnam, all or part of the Spratlys island chain are also being claimed by China, Taiwan, Malaysia and Brunei.

The DFA did not provide details of the conference, which it said aimed to “achieve a more responsive and effective mechanism for bilateral cooperation on maritime and ocean concerns.”

Foreign Undersecretary for policy Erlinda Basilio headed the 10-member Philippine panel in the JCMOC.

The 16-man Vietnamese side was headed by Deputy Foreign Minister Ho Xuan Son.

Son called on Foreign Secretary Albert del Rosario before the start of the meeting held at DFA headquarters in Metro Manila.

Holding the JCMOC meeting at the deputy foreign minister level was agreed upon by both governments in October.

Resolve claims

In January, Del Rosario called again on Vietnam and the eight other members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) to call a meeting of Spratlys claimant-countries, including China, to resolve the conflicting claims in the West Philippine Sea.

The secretary made the call during the Asean foreign ministers meeting in Siem Reap, Cambodia.

Del Rosario said Asean was “at a critical juncture of playing a momentous role in the resolution of disputes in the West Philippine Sea based on the rules-based regime of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea,” or Unclos.

Muster will

He asserted that Asean members “must muster the will as an Asean community to face these sensitive issues with determination.”

Del Rosario urged Asean members to “now play a positive and meaningful role to solve the disputes peacefully in accordance with the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation and reach a stage whereby we are able to help resolve sensitive issues decisively without letting such issues fester and adversely affect the progress of our bilateral and multilateral decisions.”

Hope they don't shoot your fishermen anymore...

Btw, good achievement.

We don't support the Vietnames fishermen if they violate the exclusive economic zones of other countries. We urge them to respect the laws of Vietnam as well as international law of the sea, UNCLOS 1982. We hope other countries in the region doing the same thing

LOL at two weak countries panicking from China's powerful attacks. No matter how much you discuss with each other and support each other, you cannot stop China from enforcing our fishing ban in the South China Sea, stop us from drilling in the deep waters with our indigenous oil rig, or stop us our aircraft carrier from patrolling the South China Sea and shooting at any foreign navies who want to challenge us!

US, Philippines Discuss Increasing Military Ties

Two decades after American forces were evicted from their biggest base in the Pacific, the Philippines may ask the United States back to counter China's growing military power. The United States and the Philippines are in talks to increase the American military presence in Southeast Asia.
According to a report in The Washington Post newspaper, the Philippines has indicated a willingness to host American ships, surveillance aircraft and joint military exercises.

The U.S. was forced to leave its naval base in the Philippines Subic Bay in the 1990s after lawmakers rejected a new treaty. But Carl Thayer, Southeast Asia analyst with the University of New South Wales says the Philippines' leadership is now reaching out to the U.S. to counter China's growing military power and continued confrontational incidents between Chinese and Philippine vessels in the South China Sea.

At this moment, South East Asia has no nuclear weapons capable but some day [if] it happends I also say my thanks to China too. Like India said thanks to China all the time due to its helped.

Maybe some south asian countries will have nuclear weapons, but they may firstly use them bomb viets.

It's not necessary for Chinese members to answer this kind of posts, no matter what argeement was made between Vietnam and Philipine, it was invalid and mere scrap of paper for us. We will keep sending drilling platform and surveillance ship to South China Sea, Chinese fisherman will fish in anywhere they want.

As for such BS Vietnam will get nuclear weapon, LOL, just go ahead, we're waiting for it. You viets are more and more similar to Indians, talk big do less:lol:

Cry? why? Lol, We are looking forward to your nuclear weapon, but firstly please don't confuse nuclear power station and nuclear weapon. China developed Nuclear weapon since 1960's, did you see we threaten you viets by nuclear weapons ?

Any way, please attack our drilling platform by your cruise missile, ballistic missile ,whatever instead of blah,blah:blah::lol:

hehe, people can make nuke warhead in nuclear plant with new laser technilogy, and we won't use it to threaten China too. It's just a deterrent weapon only, dude.

if you want us to attack your drilling platform, then let drill oil in disputed zone , or just simply set up some guard points in the middle of the sea if you have the guts like VietNam :coffee:

We are discussing to address that exists between the two countries (Vietnam and the Philippines), there is no "China" here. China is not the center of every Asia issue. Please remember for that.

In my opinion, setting up guard points make no sense for us, deploying army in coral reef without water is stupid and high cost.
We don't want to make SCS as a battle field, free navigation will be ensured. What we need is oil and resource, what resource can viets get on coral reef?

China is removing the cold war mentality and doing what we should do urgently.
PS: I envy the Viets stay on the coral reef, what a nice sunshine everyday they can enjoy:lol:
