"Phantom versus MiG-21 (Fighter Performance in Practice)”

. . . . . .
Phantom lived and will live longer then mig-21. If some fool is referring to F-7/J-7 as copy, well hear me F-7 has flown well and done its tasks well and has been a very stable platform for years. On the other hand Mig-21 flown by russians were handled good while by indian extremely poor.

The latest J-7 variant is probably the ultimate fishbed. From what I've read it was the second best dogfighter of the Pakistani Airforce in the 80s. The only plane that outmanuevered it was the F-16.

^^ yes, at an airshow, one of the paf f16 pilots told me how close in menouverabilty the f7pg was compared to the f16a

dont u guys get tired of fighter comparisons.

well mig 21 has three variants in IAF type 77(retired), type 96 (retired) and type 75 which has been upgraded to bison.

flying characteristics of all three variants is different.

The only reason the Phantom won was due to stealing Russian planes and test them to see which advantages the Phantom could have (only vertical). In reality the Phantom is overpowered brick. The BVR's sucked. The WVR was not great either. If the opponent had training hours against the Phantom it would have won everything.

Silk you must be joking about Phantoms! Successful Air Forces have been using them Including Turkey and Germans still operating it.

I wish I was joking. The major mistake was accepting vertical dogfight. If they kept it horizontal then there was no Phantom that could survive that. Just do the math. Agility versus engine power. And we do not talk about huge engine power but more then the opponent. You do need less engine power if you keep it horizontal. Maybe you understand the added value of combat commander school or Top Gun. It means that you exactly know the plane, the opponent and the swat. With that you calculate your dogfight. An F5 rolls like hell. A mig21 is terrible at low speeds. A mirage (delta) is superior in high altitude, speed, wingloading and it bleeds energy when turning. So if you can handle first few corners and keep up the speed (by getting low) it wil not win.
