PH-US Gears Up for War Games

.
Good to see that our friends in the Philippines have done a great job in their part. It was honorable to see that despite the threats of Chinese ships, the Philippines stood their ground and upheld their territorial sovereignty.

Balikatan 2012 begins tomorrow.

I actually took part in Balikatan several years ago, took part in the medical team in Puerto Princessa. :)

Philippines, US to hold war games near Spratlys

The Philippines will hold large-scale military exercises with the United States next month near an area where it is locked in a tense sea territorial row with China.

The maneuvers, an annual event which this year will involve nearly 7,000 troops, will reinforce the close military ties between the longtime allies, Armed Forces Chief Lieutenant General Jessie Dellosa said Wednesday.

“The cooperation between the two armed forces manifests the unswerving dedication and commitment of our security forces toward a more stable and secure Asia-Pacific region,” Dellosa said in a statement.

About 4,500 US troops will join 2,300 Filipino counterparts in various exercises—called Balikatan, meaning shoulder-to-shoulder—in Luzon and in Palawan, on the country’s southwest coast facing the West Philippine Sea (or the South China Sea), from April 16 to 27.

China and Taiwan claim all of the Spratlys islands in the South China Sea, while the Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia and Brunei have overlapping claims to parts of it.

The territorial dispute over the waters, which are believed to sit atop vast deposits of gas and oil, has for decades been regarded as one of Asia’s potential military flashpoints.

Tensions rose last year after the Philippines and Vietnam accused China of becoming increasingly aggressive in staking its claims.

The Philippine government alleged last year that Chinese vessels fired on Filipino fishermen and harassed an oil exploration vessel in its waters.

The Philippines responded by calling for stepped-up military ties with the US, triggering an angry response from China which does not want US involvement in the dispute.

The AFP declined to say exactly where in Palawan, or which waters off the island, next month’s military exercises would take place.

“There are different places of engagements (in Palawan),” said Major Emmanuel Garcia, spokesperson for the Philippine contingent of the joint exercises, refusing to name specific locations.

China claims waters close to the western edge of Palawan. However, waters to the eastern side of Palawan are uncontested by China.

The Philippine government has vital natural gas platforms and oil exploration projects in Palawan.

The US embassy in Manila said in a statement the exercises would include computer-simulated command post drills, multiple field exercises, as well as medical, engineering, humanitarian and civic activities.

Twenty participants from other Southeast Asian countries are also expected to take part in the drills, the US embassy statement said. AFP, with Dona Pazzibugan

Let's stick to the topic, please. And yes, Caribbean, awesome place. When I visited Bonaire (Dutch Antilles), I saw a lot of Chinese workers at the naval docks there, working as maids there as well as working in the Indian-owned stores there.

Can't imagine a country more mentally screwed up than Filippino. The US has committed massarce on a grand scale in Philippine and went to war with it numerous times.

While the Chinese never fought or enslave them, yet these Filippino have more hatred for Chinese than these white men who roam their country raping their women and children with impunity.

It shows the lack of honor and diginity in the Filippino mentality to honor their war dead and people.

It is sad that history of many of death against the hands of whites are forgotten. Many people are brainwashed by Hollywood and have forgotten many of their dead countrymen. No war stories. No memorial. It is a real SHAME that continues today.

We've been participating Balikatan with the Philippines now for quite some time; as per the VFA (Visiting Forces Agreemenet). In addition to Balikatan (which promotes infantry, counter insurgency work up), we also have naval exercises with the Philippines annually vis-a-vis the CARAT (Cooperation Afloat Readiness and Training) Program.

@ Manilaboy, Thanks for the link!

MANILA — The Philippines hailed the start of major war games with the U.S. on April 16 as a timely boost to their military alliance, amid a tense territorial dispute with China.

More than 6,000 Filipino and U.S. soldiers will take part in the 12 days of exercises across the Philippines, which come as the host nation is embroiled in a dispute with China over rival claims to the South China Sea.

At an opening ceremony for the exercises in Manila, Philippines' armed forces chief Jessie Dellosa did not specifically mention China but said the war games highlighted strong U.S. support for its weaker ally at a crucial moment.

"Given the international situation we are in, I say that this exercise, in coordination with all those we had in the past, (is) timely and mutually beneficial," Dellosa said. "The conduct of this annual event reflects the aspirations to further relations with our strategic ally, a commitment that has to be nurtured especially in the context of the evolving challenges in the region."

China and Taiwan claim nearly all of the South China Sea, even waters approaching the coasts of the Philippines, Vietnam, Brunei and Malaysia.

The competing claims have, for decades, made the sea — where there are shipping routes vital for global trade and which is believed to hold huge deposits of fossil fuels — a potential flashpoint for military conflict.

While diplomatic efforts have kept the dispute from flaring into violence over recent decades, the Philippines and Vietnam said last year that China was becoming increasingly aggressive in staking its claim to the sea.

The Philippines accused Chinese vessels of firing warning shots at Filipino fishermen, harassing an oil exploration vessel and laying markers in areas close to Philippine landmass.

Tensions spiked again last week when the Philippines sent its biggest warship to a tiny shoal about 230 kilometers (140 miles) west of the county's main island of Luzon, where eight Chinese fishing boats had been seen.

China deployed three vessels to stop Philippine personnel from arresting the fishermen, and the dispute escalated with both countries launching protests and trading accusations that the other was violating their sovereign territory.

While the fishing boats left Scarborough Shoal over the weekend, both nations are continuing to assert their sovereignty over the area, which is many hundreds of kilometers from the nearest major Chinese landmass.

Philippine President Benigno Aquino said April 16 that Balikatan had nothing to do with the Scarborough Shoal dispute and there was no reason for the war games to provoke China.

However, the Philippine military has confirmed some of the drills will be held just off the western coast of Palawan in waters facing the South China Sea.

The exercises are also being held as the U.S. is rebuilding its military presence across the Pacific, partly to counter the growing political, economic and military might of China.

The director for the U.S. side for Balikatan, Marine Brig. Gen. Frederick Padilla, confirmed April 16 that the exercises were part of U.S. President Barack Obama's military plan for the region.

"The president of the United States has stated that it is the desire of our country to be engaged more in the Pacific region. That includes working with the Filipino government and the armed forces," he told reporters.

But Padilla insisted the exercises were not meant as a warning to China amid its dispute with the Philippines over Scarborough Shoal.

"This exercise is, from our standpoint, not linked to any particular situation," Padilla said.

China, which has expressed irritation at the increased U.S. focus on Asia, said April 16 that it was displeased with the war games.

"The major trend of the times in this region is peace and development,” foreign ministry spokesman Liu Weimin said in Beijing. “Military exercise does not represent the major call of the times.”
