Peshawar Ranked 2nd Most Polutted City in World

Pakistani city Peshawar in KPK is the world’s second most polluted city, according to a World Economic Forum (WEF) report, released today.

The 2016 ranking of 20 most polluted cities in the world is done by World Health Organisation (WHO). It is based on Urban Ambient Air Pollution database of 3,000 cities. The data on air quality was collected between 2011 and 2015.

Besides Peshawar (at No 2), two other Pakistani cities have ranked in the worst Top 20. They are Rawalpindi (No 4) and Karachi (No 14).

Onitsha in Nigeria is the world’s most polluted city. The ranking highlights three more cities from Nigeria: Kaduna, Aba and Umuahia.

India’s three cities are featured in this ranking: Gwalior, Allahabad and Rajpur. One Chinese city makes it to the list.

Peshawar is surveyed second worst city for the third consecutive year with an annual average particulate matter (PM) 2.5 measurement of 540 (2016) 540 (2014) and 219 (2011) respectively.

According to the WHO’s 2016 report Onitsha, Nigeria, has the dirtiest air with an annual average PM2.5 measurement of 594 followed by Peshawar,Pakistan (540); Zabol, Iran (527); Rawalpindi, Pakistan (448); Kaduna, Nigeria (423); Aba, Nigeria (373); Riyadh, Saudi Arabia (368); Al Jubail, Saudi Arabia (359); Mazar-e-Sharif, Afghanistan (334), and Gwalior, India (329).

WHO’s database now covers 3,000 cities in 103 countries with more cities measuring air pollution levels and recognising the associated health impacts.The report says that more than 80% of people living in urban areas that monitor air pollution are exposed to air quality levels that exceed the World Health Organization (WHO) limits. While all regions of the world are affected, populations in low income cities are the most impacted.

The report says that as urban air quality declines, the risk of stroke, heart disease, lung cancer and chronic and acute respiratory diseases, including asthma, increases for the people who live in them.

WHO says more than seven million premature deaths occur every year due to air pollution, three million of them due to outdoor air quality.

Common causes of air pollution include too many cars, especially diesel fuelled vehicles, heating and cooling of big buildings, waste management agriculture and the use of coal or diesel generators for power.

This is not wrong, however it is only one piece of the whole picture. Air quality is measured in the number of certain particles as well as their respective size. For example, the news article shows air quality by the PM10 standard. It means the matter concentration of particulates that are 10 micrograms or smaller.
Other measures of air quality include the PM2.5 standard, which also happens to be the most common air polluter. Here are the most polluted cities by the PM2.5 measurements.

Comparatively, Oxford Street in London is known for the highest concentration of NO2 particles. NO2 is responsible for a number of respiratory problems as well as increasing the severity of allergic reactions, like hay-fever.

It must be wrong, Peshawar is a small city with hardly any industry around or in it.

2 stroke rikshaws and brickkiln are too be blamed but i have been there and it is isn't bad as the reports suggest.

PS: Quite a many areas of Peshawar are kept neat and clean on daily Basis, while lots of new projects for waste disposal and waste management are in vogue out there. In spite of all these if Peshawar is still amongst the most polluted ones then I would be really worried.

This can't be right, I am from Karachi and Karachi has to be the most polluted city in Pakistan, I have visited other cities as well, like Lahore, Pindi, Islamabad, Peshawar. Pindi would be close to Karachi in terms of pollution but nothing beats Karachi. Even Hyderabad felt worse than Peshawar. Actually most cities in Sindh are really polluted
