Peshawar considers building metro

"consider" = con·sid·er [ kən síddər ]
reflect on something: to think carefully about something
judge something: to have something as an opinion or point of view
respect somebody or something: to show respect for or be thoughtful of somebody's feelings or position

So in answer to your question, this idea has been proposed by the Provincial Gov, and it is under discussion. I don't think they will say oh yeah re-allocate the funding from schools and hospitals to build a metro that no one really needs, especially since KPK is prone to terrorism and this mass transit system would be like a turkey shoot on thanks giving.

But one can only hope for the best, besides i think KPK needs a lot of investment in a lot of areas, i do hope education, health and social welfare take utmost priority over roads, bridges and fancy looking parks.

I am not in favor of any government releasing some remote idea which is not feasible as their intent to gain political mileage.
Our people are too emotional. They take things seriously and grant undue advantage to political parties.

Okay if you guys want my honest answer PESHAWAR WILL NEVER HAVE A METRO RAIL..... Because

1) The city doesn't have enough population like Karachi and Lahore

2) The city is full of fanatic political parties (Taliban & Al Qaeda) that will not allow KP to be westernized

3) Security problems

4) Ugly big hooked nosed Afghans in Peshawar would find ways to bomb the metro because their country is poor and they want KP to be just as primitive as Afghanistan.

Plus Peshawar and KP are mountainous no need to ruin mother nature by all that development like Murree. Lahore and Karachi are the only cities in Pakistan with no mountains or steep hills. Development in a mountain range just wouldn't look too appealing so just focus on Lahore & Karachi. Lahore has a metro bus and Karachi has a metro rail sounds pretty fair and square:)

All true but the truth is that Peshawar is always the first city to get International level stuff, Pakistan's first international level mall was first opened in Peshawar (Deans mall)

The ignorance demonstrated by certain posters(predominantly Karachi based) about Peshawar is astounding to say the least. First, it's not a small city by any means. It has a population of 4 million, several times more than many cities with operational underground mass transit systems. It's built up over an area roughly the same as Delhi, India which has had a metro for years. More idiotic still is the assertion that it's some lawless cesspool which is a bit rich considering that the only city in Pakistan that even comes close to Karachi in terms of violence, particularly the kind that results in fatalities, is Quetta. The city is not particularly modern in terms of it's infrastructure but it's nowhere near as ghettoized or divided along ethnic and sectarian lines as the likes of Faisalabad, Karachi or the South Punjab-South KP belt that starts from Multan and ends in DI Khan.

I don't see the possibility of Metro train in any city of Pakistan withing next two decades atleast. Metro bus, Yes, but Metro train, a Big NO.

If there is a will there is a way. Lets see the statement has just come in what happens next. In my opinion, whether metro starts operating or not, but railway line will be laid within this government. After all Itefaq Foundries has to supply its steel somewhere.

janglaa bus he use to say:rofl:

Great idea should be done in 8 months n move to other projects

Peshawar seriously needs a mass transit or metro bus, using existing railway tracks for metro is good idea.

every thing is true but its population is now near 5 million..so yes it can easily have a rail metro especially since its a linear city
all they have to do is to utilize the already prsent railway that runs through centre of city
anyone who lives in peshawar will know what i mean

PESHAWAR: The Khyber Pukhtunkhwa government has allocated Rs1.5 billion for carrying out developmental work in the provincial metropolis and revival of the old walled city to restore the past heritage of the city.

This was stated by the government officials on the last day of the two-day workshop titled ‘Sustainable urban development & beatification of Peshawar’, which was organised by Institute of Architect Pakistan (IAP), Peshawar chapter, in collaboration with a civil society organisation, Caravan.

Additional chief secretary Khalid Pervez, Director Urban Policy Unit, Zubair Quraishi, Deputy Commissioner Zaheerul Islam, In-charge Chief Minister Complaint Cell, Dil Roz Khan and Chairman Caravan, Khalid Ayub spoke on the occasion.

They said a master plan was being prepared for the restoration of the historical importance and heritage of Peshawar.

The officials said the provincial government had decided to establish an institution for ensuring legislative cover to the project.

They said in the Walled City work for the revival of the historical heritage was in the pipeline. They added work on preparation of master plan for the sewerage system has been prepared and the project would be launched in May 2014.

The speakers said the city would be cleaned of pollution and turned into a tourist spot. They said most of the traffic problems would be solved through implementation of the mass transit train plan. They said Qila Balahisar would be soon declared a tourist spot and opened for public.

The participants also gave their proposals and recommendations for the sustainable development and beatification of the city. The speakers on the first day of the workshop had suggested that the old Walled City of the provincial metropolis may be declared ‘an open air museum’ to protect its heritage sites and promote its culture.

The IAP members Mansoor Ahmed Khan and Haseeb Khan presented concept papers on beautification of Peshawar and traffic plan. They said the current city of Peshawar was not a planned one while sustainable development of the city needed restoration of its identity and public ownership.

“Smart development should be planners’ priority, instead of haphazard activity,” said Mansoor. He said that it was need of the hour to make the city eco-friendly by planting trees and restoring city’s identity as city of flowers. He said the city had been built on old city’s gardens. He said plantation would add to the beauty of the city and restore its traditional flora and fauna. He said the city currently had no master plan.

Haseeb Khan said there was no commitment to civic planning in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, adding, legislative cover for urban development was also need of the hour.He said the city’s current population was 3.4 million and it was expected to touch 6 million in 2030. He added that about 44 percent area of the city was residential and 22 percent was open area. “The parks occupied only 0.77 percent of the open area while ideally it should be about 5 to 10 percent,” the town planner said.

The speaker said that roads occupied only 12 percent of the area while it should not be less than 22 percent of the total area.

The speaker noted that Peshawar being the largest refugees’ hosting city in the world had also consumed its resources, adding, presently the city had about 433,105 registered vehicles and it could go up to 861,680 in 2031.
