The opening day of Pakistan’s 31st National Games swimming competition saw five golds snapped up. The remaining ten were accounted for in the next few days, all by one swimmer, Kiran Khan. Her record-breaking performance which saw her win 12 individual and three team golds easily outshone her title ‘Golden Girl’ with which she was christened in 2001. -Text by Tabinda Najam Siddiqi, photos courtesy Kiran Khan

“In 2001, I made my debut in the 28th National Games where I got my identity as Kiran Khan. I was the youngest swimmer in the competition and won seven gold medals, three silver and three bronze. They gave me the title ‘Golden Girl’,” she says.

Despite almost no preparation for the National Games, Khan managed to exceed all expectations and break her previous record of 13 gold medals in the swimming event of Pakistan’s biggest sporting event.

“I didn’t do any particular training for these Games because I was doubtful whether they would take place as they had been canceled twice in the wake of security issues. Three days before they started, I was in Dubai participating in another competition and when I came back I was surprised to see everyone was busy training.”

The 31st Games were Kiran’s fourth Games and the competition is still throwing new things her way. “This time around there were a lot of newcomers who were very good and made the competition tough.”

Kiran has been representing Pakistan Army for the past three years before which she used to represent Pakistan Wapda. “In order to participate in the National Games, you need to be associated with a team. There were some clashes with Pakistan Wapda after which I switched to Army.”

Citing her father as her biggest inspiration, Kiran says she encourages newcomers at every chance she gets.

“In these National Games, I gave one of my medals to one of the youngest swimmers in the competition who was about nine years old and she came to the pool and participated in the longest and most difficult races. I gave out my medal to her as an appreciation for her effort.”

Kiran credits her success to her entire team which she says keeps her motivated and helps her stay fit.

“My training regime is very simple. I train twice a day, I keep myself fit by going to the gym a lot. I have my trainer who works with me day and night to keep me fit even when I am not swimming. During winters, which is my off season, I train only in the gym.”

She also says young girls take part in sports and represent the country in the best possible way. “We should represent our country and sports is one of the best ways to do that. Don’t be shy and just follow your heart.”

Great stuff, makes me proud, however I'm worried about her safety since the first thing that popped into my mind seeing this was:

Kiran Khan, coming soon to a fatwa near you :)
