The Dastkari Haat Samiti is hosting its fortnight-long Annual Crafts Bazaar at Dilli Haat, New Delhi, beginning Dec 30. This years bazaar will showcase exquisite crafts from South Asian countries.
The highlights of the Crafts Bazaar this year will be the exquisite crafts and cultural items of South Asian countries like Pakistan, Afghanistan, Nepal, Myanmar, Bhutan and Sri Lanka. The United Nations is playing a key role in organizing the bazaar.
Since all the artisans, both national and international, are women, the bazaar is expected to also take forward the strong message highlighting women's role in reducing differences across nations.
The organizing samiti's president Ms. Jaitly says, "One of the two sections of bazaar is South Asian Women for Peace as Creativity in which women artisans from Pakistan, Afghanistan, Nepal, Burma, Bhutan and Sri Lanka will showcase their skills. The whole South Asian region is a disturbed one, but the women are sustaining their children and families by practicing their traditional skills and handicrafts. If there is economic sustainability then there would be no reason for anyone to take up the gun."

This is a good start. Though the above fair is quite small, more of these can be good means to bring people closer across the borders. India and Pakistan suffer from almost the same problems. Such gathering may not be economically beneficial, but emotionally, anything that brings the two closer, is good. We should share technology and knowledge for more basic things like agriculture, arts and crafts. More sporting events should be organized.
