ISLAMABAD: Interior Minister Rehman Malik has rebutted India’s charge of Islamabad doing nothing to stop terrorism across the Line of Control (LoC), saying that had the government been actively supporting terrorism there would be no peace in India.

“It is unfair to say that we have not acted on our eastern border. We need to be appreciated by India for our efforts despite facing threats along our western border. We have evolved a formula of 3 d’s – development, deterrence and dialogue,” he said while talking to visiting Indian journalists.

He also asserted that Pakistan had not lagged behind in cracking down on elements allegedly involved in the 26/11 terror attacks in Mumbai. “Within hours of the attack, we got in touch with Delhi and offered out unconditional support,” he said.

Malik said that investigations were immediately ordered in Pakistan after the attacks “without waiting for any dossiers from India”, adding that he had personally supervised the investigations. “The result is before you. Seven of the accused are facing trials. Another 15 have been declared absconding... and the trials are being heard. All the accused have exhausted all their legal remedies to get bail or have their first information reports cancelled,” the interior minister said.

“In the beginning, the evidence provided by India was not sufficient, but with the combination of information that we received and credible information that we developed here, we can now say that we have given the court enough reason to convict the accused,” Malik added.

Stopped: He insisted that 26/11 could have been prevented “if India had shared information on Ansari and Sabauddin with Islamabad and conveyed the recovery of a geo-map that indicated that terrorists were going to attack selected places”.

Malik insisted that Indian agencies and non-state actors were involved in Balochistan and pointed out that the matter had been already taken up with Delhi.

“We have credible signals and evidence of interference in Balochistan. Let Mr Chidambaram come here... we are ready to welcome him. I am even willing to meet him in India or a third country if he so chooses. Let us sort out our security issues and decide what to do about them. I will come up with my evidence, my issues, my observations and he is welcome to bring his own. Bring your experts and sort it all out once and for all,” the interior minister said.
