Poverty rate declines from 37.2% to 32%

The latest data of the Planning Commission indicates that poverty has declined to 32 per cent in 2009-10 from 37.2 per cent five years ago.

The preliminary estimates are based on the formula suggested by the Tendulkar Committee for computing the number of poor.

Planning Commission Deputy Chairman Montek Singh Ahluwalia on Wednesday told reporters that the 2009-10 data shows a decline in poverty from 37.2 per cent in 2004-05 to 32 per cent in 2009-10 as the per the preliminary data worked out by the Planning Commission member Abhijit Sen.

The Tendulkar Committee had suggested that poverty be estimated on the basis of consumption based on the cost of living index instead of caloric intake. It said that the basket of goods should also include services such as health and education. The new poverty line, as suggested by the Tendulkar Committee, is different for rich and poor States, and for rural and urban areas within a State. “These are preliminary data. Mr. Sen has worked on them. He has reported that the 2009-10 data shows a decline in poverty from 37.2 per cent in 2004 to 32 per cent in 2009. I agree with him,” Dr. Ahluwalia said.

He said the National Sample Survey, which conducts large sample surveys every five years, will launch its next round in 2011-12. Estimates of poverty are important because the cheap grains under the proposed Food Security law will be provided based on these numbers.

Dr. Ahluwalia also raised doubts over the feasibility of achieving 10 per cent average economic expansion in the 12th Plan (2012-17), and said the next plan would target GDP growth of 9 to 9.5 per cent in the next five years. “If you ask me personally, I think setting the target of 10 per cent GDP growth as an average for [the] 12th Plan is not feasible. It would be somewhere between 9 and 9.5 in the next Plan period,” he said.

Not only this $2 billion, india also have to pay billions for damage caused by Farakka and other dams. Not to mention pay for arms, money and materials indian forces looted from Bangladesh after independence.

And who brought you the independence despite threats from USA?

Why, oh god, why do people love to fight? Fighting should be the last resort. Do not take out your frustrations on others.

how old is the video ?? cause you seem to be following the Indian media and Indian affairs a lot..so hoep you know the answer...waiting for it.

2010... you can see the upload date also. but this year when government proposed 30 rupee a day is the poverty margin... then there was a uproar in India as with that money one can not even cover the cost of food 3 times a day... so if the poverty margin is increased from 30 rupee it will increase the % of people below poverty line.

But multi dimensional poverty index put this figure to 55% in 2010...

55% of India's population poor: Report - Times Of India

About 645 million people or 55% of India's population is poor as measured by this composite indicator made up of ten markers of education, health and standard of living achievement levels.

But some other estimate put the figure up to 77%

It's official: 37 pc live below poverty line - India News - IBNLive

Two other reports had pegged poverty at higher levels. The Arjun Sengupta report had said 77 per cent of Indians live on less than Rs 20 a day while the N C Saxena Committee report had said 50 per cent of people live below poverty. However, the Tendulkar report with a figure of at 37 per cent, is perhaps more acceptable to the government.

not really... Indian government measured this based on the poverty line 30 rupee earning day... due to protest from diffent group... it has been withdrawn now... new estimate is coming soon... with much higher poverty level...

n do not try to compare the poverty level of india against Bangladesh... both country has different structure... Bangladesh is developing with a bottom up strategy and India is developing based on service sector only.

In bangladesh major earning source is garments export... n it is 90% employed by woman and second source is foreign remittance... Both of this is helping people to come out of poverty... obviously microfinance towards the poor femalsis also playing a big role... along with heavy government subsidy.

For India development is coming from service sector such as IT, call center etc... Where IT contribute more then 2.5% gdp growth... n the whole service sector contributing around 3-4% of the gdp growth. But all these sector is employing a tiny number of people. Such as IT is employing around 3 million people but they are responsible for 2.5% of indian gdp growth.

But for Bangladesh service sector is not contributing anything to gdp ... it is almost nil. Government is trying to look at this sector. Most of the development is coming from lower level employment/earning.... So it is helping the poor to get out of poverty...

But for the case of India poors are remaining out of the development... as gdp growths are coming from the educated middle class mostly... So it is quite natural India has more poor...

Bangladesh is trying to follow the china model... growth driven by industrialization or manufacturing... If India can not move towards industrialization n able to employ its poor and woman sector it will be completely useless the whole development. In bangladehs industrialization account 33% and In india 30% ... in West Bengal it is less then 10% n in NE India it is almost nil.

Half of India’s population lives below the poverty line
By Arun Kumar
2 August 2010

According to a new Oxford University study, 55 percent of India’s population of 1.1 billion, or 645 million people, are living in poverty. Using a newly-developed index, the study found that about one-third of the world’s poor live in India.

The Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) has been developed by the Oxford Poverty and Human Development Initiative and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) as a more precise and comprehensive means of estimating poverty levels.

................
Half of India?s population lives below the poverty line

.
so eventually what i learn is...

BD poverty rate is 31% with a population of 151,487,000.

India poverty rate is 32% with the population of 1,210,193,422.

P.S : an advice to TS...start as many poverty thread on India as early as possible..later on you might not find these topics worth comparing.

hasta la vista

You are right Farakka is causing 2.5% gdp growth less then expected which is equivalent to the amount of contribution by Indian IT sector...

Missing a historic chance in Bangladesh

This was grossly unfair in and of itself. Worse, the diversion caused enormous losses of food and fisheries production in Bangladesh for almost two decades. According to Ashok Swain of Sweden's Uppsala university, Farakka changed the river's hydrology, "disrupted fishing and navigation, brought unwanted salt deposits into rich farming soil…" and caused an annual loss estimated at 2- 2.5% of GDP.

This is equivalent to taking the entire Information Technology sector out of the Indian economy! Even worse was the human tragedy, including large-scale displacement, destitution and forced migration. Farakka became a symbol of Indian domination and stoked anti-Indianism in Bangladesh, which the Right has cynically exploited.

I already proved here in another thread that if we use identical metrics to measure poverty rate then half of bd population lies below poverty line as opposed to 40% of india, but these dimwit don't seem to comprehends logical reasoning.

Now I guess mods will give me infraction for calling a dimwit, dimwit, but this particular guy is allowed to bring poverty in each thread!

.
Bangladeshis should pay for the lands they stole from their minorities first, and they still manage to flock to calcutta. Heck majority of them at some point reaped the benifit of enemy property act!

i am using indian derived poverty measure of 20 rupee a day... After seeing your data I have searched on this n the conclusion is that both government of India and Bangladesh also account subsidy apart from personal income. That is why it is little less then the world bank estimate.

I think you have allergy if your real poverty stricken indian face has been exposed. Just go n look who has started this... n who has brought up the illegal migration issue 1st. N stop trying portraying yourself like a pundit. Has seen lots of kolkata babu in canada n their living style and knowledge.

do you want me to post the articles again??? Just see my earlier posts ... I have posted about it... this year it has been raised from 20 rupee to 30 rupee a day. Even though government has to withdraw it due to protest as with this income one will not be able to even cover 3 times a day meal cost.
