Separatist billboards

Ahmed Quraishi

There is little question that an American-occupied Afghanistan has emerged as the biggest security threat to Pakistan. But you wouldn't know it watching the Pakistani ruling elite, busy in creating the world's most bloated government. The CIA is attacking Pakistani territory with impunity. Afghanistan, in effect an American base, is the main source of inspiration, funding and weapons to terrorists spreading chaos in both NWFP and Balochistan.

And now we have 40-feet wide billboards that have mysteriously sprung up on the main roads of NWFP showing the map of a new country – Pashtunistan – with meticulously defined borders that incorporate most of northwestern Pakistan. This 'billboard campaign' has to be the boldest statement of rebellion and separatism ever made in the history of nation-states anywhere in the world. Yet it's business as usual in Islamabad.

Security analysts have been warning since 2007 that Pakistan is committing a blunder by allowing Pakistani politicians to conduct their separate foreign policies with foreign countries, especially America whose massive agenda of redrawing the map of the region is a direct threat to Pakistani interests. America and Britain in particular have a history of orchestrating coups and covertly funding chaos and insurgencies and changing governments in our part of the world. In this context, it is disturbing to see how our political and military leaderships have allowed Washington, its diplomats and its spymasters to directly access political parties, invite them on secret, all-expenses-paid trips to Washington and have direct say in Pakistani affairs. The American intervention, starting late 2006 and early 2007, effectively managed to bring a regime change in Islamabad, thanks partially to the blunders of the previous regime. There is no free lunch and the Americans have specific expectations from the new rulers in Pakistan: The permission for increased American military operations inside Pakistan, meeting the American desire for clipping Pakistan's intelligence capabilities, and changing the military's orientation from a standing army into some kind of a police force focused on fighting insurgencies.

The deliberate destabilization of Pakistan will result in turning large parts of the country against the federal government and increasingly draw the military into a civil war that will bleed us for decades to come in the presence of covert support from Afghan soil. The result would be a weakened Pakistani state unable to sustain control over its territory and over its vast arsenal of nuclear and strategic assets. The Americans are also keen that Pakistan gets entangled again in the IMF cobweb, which basically means one more American control over Pakistan. Interestingly, the only thing that appears to be stopping the current government from cowing to American diktat is domestic political reaction. Apart from the IMF option, we are yet to see any real moves to deal with the economic crisis.

It is time for Pakistani commentators and civil society activists to realize that their idealism has resulted in encouraging the people to vote for the same tried, tested and failed politicians who cannot deliver. Our civil society activists need to stop viewing every call to reform our democracy and political system with an eye of suspicion. What would it take for our liberals and commentators to understand that even good ideas, like local governments, don't work under our paralyzed political system? It is time to reorient the Pakistani state and government structure.

Special interest groups cannot be allowed to have permanent monopoly over our politics. Political parties need to be forcibly democratized to allow the ascent of Pakistan's middle class in politics. Ethnic politics, the new Trojan horse of anyone who wants to meddle in our affairs, have to be ended through legislation and by creating more provinces on administrative lines and by strengthening Pakistani nationalism. The question is: Who will do this? The current crop of politicians can't. The military is not trained to do this, at least not alone. I am afraid we are soon approaching a situation where something will have to be thought of outside the box.

It's either this or more separatist billboards in the future.

The writer works for Geo TV. Email: aq@ahmedquraishi.com

Is this true?

.
The writer is a pro-Musharraf lobbyist. He will sell one of his kidneys to paint the current government in a poor light.

But the claim billboards of Pashtunistan should be substantiated with pictures. He is a afterall a famous journalist who has worked in both the print, electronic and the television media.

. .
No, its not true.

BTW, your memory is too short, have you forgotten that this is the same writer whom you dismissed as a "Paranoid guy" in some other thread. Interesting, how some people are on this forum only for mischef.....

Thanks. The reason for my posting partly is you. If you can take that report at face value why can't you take this at face value when it is written by the same guy. I'm posting your taunts at me on the other thread.

Your taunt at me regarding the authentic sources itself implies your endorsement of main article post.

And now please don't derail the thread.

The billboards are/were indeed put up and the ANP and JUI-F traded accusations over them.

Lets everybody please be a little more "khun sard" - such things are psychologically stressful and we must recognize them for their effect.

Damn bastards.

I can't read whats actually written on the billboard as that's in Pashtu, maybe Neo can translate that, the caption below is in Urdu. In Roman Urdu that would be:

Bannu: Indus Highway pe lagay huay ek baray ishtihari board par Pakistan or Afghanistan ke illaakon par mushtamil pakhtoon naksha vaazih hai. Jab ke darakht ki jarron main tehreer hai "Pakhtoon ek hai".

Lol dunno if this kind of Urdu would be understandable by you, so a loose translation: Bannu: Upon the Indus Highway there's a big billboard depicting the Pakhtoon map with Pakistan and Afghanistan's Pakhtoon areas. Whereas on the roots of the tree it states "Pakhtoon is one".

Which by the way is the biggest lie. There are massive differences between, a pakhtoon from neighborhood to neighborhood. Anyway who cares, seems like Ahmed Qureshi is right and this dumbass government must do something about it.

Hoti orders inquiry into JUI-F charges

November 06, 2008

PESHAWAR: NWFP Chief Minister Ameer Haider Hoti on Wednesday said that he had ordered an inquiry into the issue of signboards of “greater Pakhtunistan” raised by a leader of a religious party during a news conference three days back. Provincial chief of Fazl faction of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI-F) Gul Naseeb had claimed during a news conference this week that signboards of “greater Pakhtunistan” had been installed in Mardan and southern districts of NWFP. “Awami National Party (ANP) is a patriotic party which believes in national harmony and integration,” said the chief minister while talking to journalists during his visit to Mardan district. He said the signboard issue was a conspiracy against the party and they would investigate it.

Hoti distributed compensation among victims of the recent suicide attack in Mardan. He said the government and ANP’s stance about renaming of the province was clear. Regarding the militancy, he said those killing innocent people were the enemies of the religion, humanity and stability of the country. “It is our collective responsibility to fight the common enemy together,” said Hoti while referring to the scourge of terrorism and militancy in the province. staff report

Religious parties targeting ANP only

Monday, November 17, 2008
By Khalid Kheshgi

PESHAWAR: After Maulana Fazlur Rehman-led Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam, the Jamaat-e-Islami has also joined the smear drive against the ANP, issuing a ‘white paper’ against the ANP-led provincial government, assailing it for not restoring peace and providing relief to the common man during its 200-day rule in the NWFP.

On the other hand, the ANP strengthened its tally in the provincial assembly when independent MPA-elect, Gohar Nawaz Khan, from Haripur joined the party while another independent MPA from Lakki Marwat, Dr Khalid Raza Zakori, announced his support to the nationalist party.

Decision by some eminent people like former provincial minister Amanullah Kundi and former senator Qazi Muhammad Anwar to join the ANP has improved its image in the public.

The ANP is being blamed by the religious parties for waging an alien war against its own people in Swat and other parts of the province. The return of Asfandyar Wali Khan to the country and his visits to the houses of Wali Bagh bombing victims also countered the propaganda launched by those who said that the ANP chief had fled the province as well as Pakistan after a suicide attack on his life on October 2, 2008 — the second day of Eidul Fitr.

Recently, JI provincial Ameer Sirajul Haq also issued a white paper, saying the ANP-led provincial government had failed to maintain peace and that the party leadership was toeing the policies of Western masters like Musharraf.

Siraj also alleged the government had failed to come up to the people’s expectations by not honouring any of their claims during the first 200-day rule. The JUI-F, which ruled the NWFP for five years, opened the Pandora’s box when its provincial Ameer Senator Maulana Gul Naseeb Khan told the media that the ANP-led government was working for Greater Pakhtunistan and had installed billboards in southern districts of the Frontier province. The same day, local political leaders had arranged a ‘Pakhtunkhwa Na-manzur’ seminar in Peshawar and vowed to launch a vigorous movement if the province was renamed Pakhtunkhwa.

The ANP-led provincial government denied the charges and termed it a meaningless issue being raised at a time when the ANP-PPP coalition government had appealed to political parties to join them in the war against insurgency and militancy.

Interestingly, Fazlur Rehman and Asfandyar Wali Khan appeared before the national media at two different functions in Peshawar on November 13 wherein Maulana, flanked by Akram Khan Durrani, accused the ANP of reviving the ‘Pakhtunistan’ issue.

The same day when Asfandyar Wali Khan was approached for comments on Maulana’s statement, he said such petty issues were meant to divert the attention from the real issue of combating insurgency and militancy in the province and tribal areas.

Strangely, the billboards of the Greater Pakhtunistan have been installed in the southern districts where the JUI-F has district governments in Bannu and DI Khan, the hometowns of former NWFP chief minister Akram Khan Durrani and Maulana Fazl Rehman, respectively.
