It happens in the sub continent because girls and women are regarded as family possession and property until married off. The same sick attitude exists amongst the wealthy and the middle class and the poor. I am marrying a very educated Indian Muslim from Gujarat and I was really taken aback with his westernised manners and way of thinking until I met his mother. Her attitude was that once the nikah was completed I would "become the property of her family". Took me two whole days to put her in her place despite her son trying to defend her "backward way of thinking". This kind of mentality must be nipped in the bud and the entire mentality of the desi male must be re-engineered with education.

Best of luck. You can take a girl out of the trailer, but you can’t take the trailer out of the girl.

Okay.

@BDforever @Bilal9 @Khan saheb , so the Tableeghi Jamaat have much found inroads in BD too?? I know that BD has ( or used to have ) the "Biswa Ijtema" ( world gathering ) of the mullahs and mullans. Add to that the murders of the "liberals".

All this has effect on family lives.
probably he was the victim, chased by a girl's family for disturbing her lol

For six hours, 20-year-old Sushma writhed in agony on the floor as the poison did its work. Her father who forced the poison down her throat and watched her die later told police it was just punishment for loving a man outside the community and insisting on marrying him against their wishes.

The chilling crime in Gollanabeedu village, barely 15km from Mysuru, was revealed as police took up suo motu investigation a week after Sushma's death. Rumours of an "honour killing" did the rounds as the girl who was called to talk to the family on February 20 was cremated secretly at dawn the next day.

Sushma's father Kumar Gowda has been detained for questioning. Police are still looking for her mother and uncle, who helped Gowda kill her and destroy evidence after the murder.

Additional SP N Rudramuni said Gowda, his wife Jayanthi and her brother Kempanna were opposed to Sushma's relationship with a Dalit youth, a painter from the neighbouring Alanahalli village. Sushma was the eldest of three daughters and had dropped out of college. In December last year, Gowda, along with a few panchayat members, tried to dissuade Sushma and when he failed, sent her to a relative's house in Hulikere in Mandya district.

Since then, Gowda, a farmer, allegedly called Sushma home on three occasions to convince her to marry a man of the family's choice. Sushma is said to have refused their proposal outright, angering them. The family called her a fourth time on February 20 but this was no effort at rapprochement.

"Involving her in a conversation, the girl's mother is said to have offered her orange juice laced with a toxic liquid. Sushma took a few sips and stopped, saying the juice tasted strong. Seeing their ruse had failed, Kumar, Jayanthi and Kempanna held her nostrils and forced the juice down her throat," Rudramuni said.

"She was given the toxic juice at their farmhouse around 10.30pm. She died around 4am on February 21. Gowda said Sushma struggled for six hours, writhing in pain on the floor. After she died, her body was cremated in the farm around 5am," Rudramuni said.
"We're looking for the mortal remains of the girl and any other evidence."

The crime would have been buried but for beat constable Ravi who tipped off his seniors on hearing rumours of the unsuspecting girl being killed over a love affair.

A case was filled at Heggadadevana Kote police station on Wednesday. Police officials said that Gowda admitted to killing his daughter with the help of his wife and brother-in-law but showed no remorse. All three accused in the case have been booked for murder and destruction of evidence.

Killing anyone means that person also need same punishment. When they know that they will also not lived more because of this act they will at least think twice.

The Tableeghi Jamaat essentially have the lower middle class pseudo educated as their audience only. Educated folks are much more liberal in Bangladesh than most of the subcontinent. I have NEVER heard of parents trying to kill their children for marrying the wrong kind of person. Honor killing is UNHEARD OF.

They might cut off relations at worst - that's it.

The law will ensure death by hanging for any participants willingly acting to murder a human being - no matter who they are. There is no societal or police support for honor killings.

Sufi Islam does not condone violence....

Some Pakistanis who have never been to Bangladesh have no idea how our society functions and how tolerant it is despite being a Muslim country. Don't get annoyed - these rigid-minded people don't know.

In India, sadly, the TJ has taken over the minds of much of the middle middle-class. Educational institutions and residential areas are where much of the brainwashing happens.

That is what I too guessed.

That is what I too guessed.

In Bangladesh we were lucky to have a strong tradition of Western-educated upper-middle class upbringing which neutralized any over-zealous extremist religious influence. These people formed the technocrat class who have also moved into business leadership positions recently.

In India's Muslim middle class - that populace may have been lost to brain drain to the West (or even to Pakistan).
