Pamela Anderson asks India to retire old monkeys
The Himalayan Times : Pamela Anderson asks India to retire old monkeys - Detail News : Nepal News Portal

NEW DELHI: Former "Baywatch" star Pamela Anderson has appealed to India's top medical institute to retire old monkeys used in scientific research, animal rights group PETA India said Saturday.

The Hollywood actress said she had seen a video allegedly secretly filmed at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) that showed sick monkeys and rabbits which had been kept in cages for up to 20 years.

"It broke my heart to see the suffering," Anderson said in a letter written to AIIMS director R. C. Deka on behalf of the People for Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA).

The video, which was enclosed with the letter, showed animals under extreme distress, with a monkey racing up the walls of the cage to get out and a rat compulsively running in circles, she said.

"The animals suffering behind closed doors at AIIMS must endure this nightmare every day," she said.

The video also depicted newborn rats being shaken in their cages by attendants as well as wounded rats being denied veterinary care, Anderson said.

"Please, won't you at least agree to retire the animals who have been at AIIMS the longest to a sanctuary?" Anderson asked Deka, adding that Indian law required all laboratories to "rehabilitate" animals after three years.

A spokesman for AIIMS told Indian newspaper The Times of India that the institute had not received any letter from Anderson, and said that the research facility was "state of the art" and fully compliant with Indian laws.

Spokesman Y. K. Gupta said that AIIMS already had rehabilitation facilities for animals after they had been spent three years as experiment subjects.

Anderson, 43, recently came to India's financial capital Mumbai to participate in the reality television show "Bigg Boss," the Indian version of "Big Brother."

I agree with Pam.

Pamila has a Point, But Blaming it upon India is a Different Issue.... Many Universities, Almost all of them first take Animals as Specimens before Testing it upon Humans

Pamela Anderson pressures India to end monkey testing after watching 'heartbreaking' lab video

Pamela Anderson has accused one of India's most prestigious research centres of animal cruelty.

The former Baywatch star has written to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) asking them to ban testing on monkeys.

She wrote a letter to director R.C. Deka after watching a video allegedly exposing animal cruelty at the New Delhi centre.

'It broke my heart to see the suffering that is documented in the enclosed video', wrote Anderson, in a letter sent on behalf of People for Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA).

'But the animals suffering behind closed doors at AIIMS must endure this nightmare every day.'

In the letter, Anderson said dozens of monkeys are kept in 'cramped, barren, and rusty cages for years on end,' and appealed for the release of one monkey she said had been suffering at the research facility for nearly 20 years.

The former Playboy model says she cried while viewing the video, and described workers 'slamming' animals against their wire cages and 'taunting' the monkeys by pretending to kick them.

AIIMS officials said they had not received the letter and added the facility is 'state of the art' and insisted the animals are kept in upgraded and humane conditions.

'Firstly, we are yet to ascertain the authenticity of the letter (by Pamela Anderson).

'But considering that it has been directed by People for Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), we promise that the animals are kept in much better and upgraded conditions at the hospital's laboratories,' AIIMS spokesperson Y.K. Gupta said.

Gupta added: 'There are 43 monkeys at the facility, and all of them are less than 10 years of age.'

I agree..but, will it be enough?
Experiments involving non- human primates (NHPs) include toxicity testing for medical and non-medical substances; studies of infectious disease, such as HIV and hepatitis; neurological studies; behavior and cognition; reproduction; genetics; and xenotransplantation. Around 65,000–70,000 are used every year in the United States and European Union. Most are purpose-bred, while some are caught in the wild!!
