Pakistan's new nuclear reactors in Karachi

.
The article seems negative but it's not bad for one to stay sharp.
Congrats on progress!

Sir i do not dispute that fact but the sea line is quite long and what if it is made another 20 miles away just to be on the safe side. I understand the cooling process per say so I did keep that in mind and there are many tributaries which can be used inland also

Setting it up closer to a population center probably reduces the cost needed in connectivity via road, rail etc.

I'm honestly not informed about the particular reasons, just a guess.

I think what these people are trying to say - and a sensible approach - is to build the reactor by all means, but don't do it so close to a major city. No matter how safe a technology is, there is always a non-zero (very low) risk of something going wrong - the Fukushima incident is a case in point - till it happened, it wasn't thought possible. If the consequences in this case are too severe to comprehend - which I think they are, then its better to cut the potential risk by setting up the reactor in a less populated location - say Balochistan. Such a project will also bring much needed jobs in Balochistan, which should help the Pakistani government in its quest to pacify the local population.

India is building a number of nuclear power reactors - indigenous and foreign designs - but they are being built away from thickly populated areas. Large projects have been delayed by protests in several places - but I think its for the best because it forces the planners to be extra cautious. We have been very lucky that in 50+ years of operating nuclear power, there have only been three major accidents across the world. Lets continue to treat nuclear energy with a lot of respect and caution, pay heed to public fears and ensure that the next 50 years are free of any incident.

Pakistan should go in for nuclear energy - it is cheaper than coal/gas/hydro and doesn't emit carbon dioxide into the atmosphere - a major concern now. Most of the cost of producing nuclear energy is incurred during the plant construction - cost of uranium is a minor element in cost of electricity from a nuclear plant - so it won't be affected by any changes in prices of coal/gas/oil in the future.

Some people had asked about attacks on such installations in war-time. I don't think that's even possible - India and Pakistan declare to each other a list of their nuclear installations. An attack on any of these will be considered the same as a nuclear attack. Building the nuclear plant in the less populated Balochistan will also ensure that a large buffer zone can be created around the plant - where unauthorized people are not permitted - that will at least partly cut down the risk of a terror attack - something Pakistan can't wish away.

This article in Washington Post is full of speculative propaganda. The place where these reactors will be built do not have a history of earthquakes. Besides there is no risk of Tsunamis because the site is on a ledge 39 feet high as mentioned by the responsible general manager of Karachi’s reactor project. There have been no known Tsunamis in Karachi in recent history. I say we should go for it.
Even US is thinking of reviving its nuclear industry by building new nuclear reactors which will produce less waste. Washington Post should not put its credibility at stake by publishing propaganda articles.

kanupp - Google Maps

Karachi Nuclear Plant was built at this location in 1972 and there have been no Tsunami or earthquake at the site. Its is just propaganda from the Americans et al.

Original KANUPP was built by Canada in KArachi 70s/80s which also has similar capacity then I don't see what the problem is here? People want electricity, damnit! They don't care about such bullcrap! Plus the EIA has already been passed and there is no problem so why these idiots crying foul?

Propaganda out of jealousy hadood baie (hood baey) like people always remaind active against Pakistan on foreign investment. Its one and half decade old planning of foreign enemies and agencies operating in Pakistan to steal Pak warhead. ALHAMDOLILLAH remaind a dream and would ever. Planner of such stealing and terrorist operating in Pakistan are one and same with different faces.
another propaganda piece by the cousins of the likes of asma jihangir and hoodboy

Not Karachiaiites but the circus troop of hoodbhouy...
Unlike the fake-ster Abdul qadeer khan who supported the water car fantasy , hoodhboy is actually a scientist. I don't agree completely with his assessment but His words carry weight internationally too.

Pervez Hoodbhoy is a renowned Pakistani nuclear scientist. We must at least listen to his arguments and and address them.

He has argument against everything. I remember he was parroting against HEC and progress being made in higher education day in and day out. Now that the HEC has become just a poor shadow of what it was 10 years ago, the damn monkey is happily quite. Same is his problem with literally everything. I bet if you dig you would find his criticism on every other development project. The best way to avoid criticism from his kind is to do nothing.

And oh, I don't give a damn about the that backstabbing metallurgist with a claim on the whole nuclear program of Pakistan.

Govt. should aim to make around 15-20 1100MW reactors all along the coastal belt along with the making new port cities like Gwadar.
