LOCKHEED MARTIN (LOCKHEED) P-3 ORION
Type; naval intelligence, surveillence and reconnaissance (ISR) platform
first flight August 1958.
the US Navy has run a number of upgrade programmes for its P-3C fleet, notably for the surface warfare requirement.
LM has marketed refurbished ex-US Navy examples with Pakistan.
P-3C Update III;
Pakistan Orions, basically update III, have certain systems replaced by export-standard equipment and thus known as II.
PN acquired eight P-3C Orions from surplus US Navy stocks in 2005. US FMS of eight aircraft valued at around USD970m. the US has named Pakistan a major non-NATO ally in 2005.
US Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR) awarded LM a USD6m FMS contract in April 2006 for initial work on the project. this grew to USD43.9m overall for the upgrade of the seven P-3Cs. two previously grounded P-3Cs were also returned to airworthy condition by OGMA of Portugal at PNS Mehran in 2005 and back in service by 2007. these are now being joined by the seven ex-US Navy examples in the above FMS deal to give Pakistan a fleet of nine modernised P-3Cs. it emerged in late 2006, that at least three of the ex-US Navy P-3Cs would receive the Northrop-Grumman E-2C Hawkeye 2000 AEw suite. the project was subject to approval and is valued at USD855m.the potential command and control capabilities of these advanced P-3s is aimed at improving Pakistan's southern border protection and to develop an effective air defence network for its naval forces and provide a AEW surveillance and enhanced command, control and communications capability. the Hawkeye 2000 mission suite fitted inside the P-3s will offer an unparalleled capability in the region for the PN and marks the first application of the system outside the E-2 platform.
LM delivered the second of the batch of seven upgraded P-3C to Pakistan at NAS Jacksonville, Florida on January 2010. the contractor is upgrading the airframe and mission systems of seven P-3s that had been in storage with the 309th AMARG at Davis-Monthan AFB, Arizona. the initial aircraft were delivered in October 2009, with planned project completion by 2013.

I still think the smartest new fighter development deal for PAF is the J-10. I really think that aircraft has tremendous potential. The JF-17 is great, but it was really intended to replace the J-7, Mirage III, V's, A-5's. The sooner Pakistan starts with a J-10 program and procurement, the better for her.
