ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif on Wednesday said Pakistan has a strong defence against any aggression and the country's nuclear assets are a guarantee to its security.

In a message on the 16th anniversary of Youm-e-Takbeer, the Prime Minister congratulated the nation and said the country's nuclear assets are in safe hands.

Prime Minister Sharif said Pakistan is a responsible nation and is playing a vibrant role in the comity of nations.

"Let me state on this occasion that our nuclear capability should not be a point of concern for anyone as it is only for peaceful purpose and for the welfare of our people," he said.

He said it was the day on May 28th, 1998, when Allah Almighty blessed Pakistani nation in making its defence impregnable.

Sharif said the prime credit goes to the nation which stood behind this programme and made the resources available for it besides helping to forge a consensus in this regard.

He appreciated the scientists, engineers and technicians belonging to strategic organizations who by virtue of their knowledge, determination and hard work made this happen.

The Prime Minister said this was not an easy task at all and limited resources and international embargoes on technology were apparently insurmountable obstacles.

Sharif said Pakistan is cooperating with international organizations for peaceful uses of nuclear technology for the benefit of mankind.

Pakistan has already expressed its willingness to provide this assistance and know-how under the aegis of IAEA in various aspects of peaceful application of nuclear technology to any country needing the same, he added.

He said, "We have expressed this resolve at many international fora," and mentioned that Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission was using nuclear technology for the socio-economic uplift of the country in sectors like medicine, agriculture and energy.

The Prime Minister said nuclear power offers unique advantages and "We intend to use this option of power production along with other available options."

He said Pakistan is running three nuclear power plants, two more are under construction and in the recent past, ground-breaking of another two nuclear power plants has been carried out in Karachi.

Planning for construction of many more nuclear power plants is also underway, he added.

The Prime Minister termed the 16th anniversary of Youm-e-Takbeer a day of celebration and thankfulness and said Almighty has blessed us with the means to safeguard this land and live with dignity.

"Our intentions are noble and I pray that our resolve remains undeterred," he said.
