Pakistan’s Cold War Technology shrinks the effectiveness of India’s S-400 ABM System – Akash S Muham

Employing anti-radiation missiles isn't so simple. A well devised system like S-400 will randomize its energy output so it's not constantly emitting radiation that can be tracked. Since the ARM will rely on a warhead that follows the maximum strength of a signal, a set of well placed emitters can emit misleading signatures that causes the missile to go around in circles until it runs out of fuel.

In the Yugoslav war, they countered ARMs by turning off the radars and turning them back on manually for a short while only. In modern warfare, this technique is now widespread. Modern radars would automate it through some sort of low probability of intercept pattern.

That's where tactics come to play. You have the assets, all you need is to study the enemy and come up with tactics to counter it. That's where Wild Weasel comes to play. Modern ARMs are way more advanced than what they used to be during the Yugoslav war. One might say the same for radars but loopholes in the radar coverage is always a possibility and can be used to counter the threat.

Agreed. Basically, it's not as simple as launching a bunch of missiles. It needs time to work around an advanced air defence system.

In any Cold Start type escalation, time will be of essence. India will be looking to land quick and brutal punches to destroy our infrastructure. What can keep it at bay is:

1. An air defence that forces it to do the hard work and take its time.
2. Or an air defence that can neutralize any saturation attack India can launch.

This either raises the bar for our conventional capability, or decreases the nuclear threshold to a level where S. Asia risks nuclear conflict due to any minor or major terrorist event.

My advise to Pakistan would be to form a joint task force comprising army, navy and Air Force, deploy them in China with their assets and have them train throughout the year against Chinese S-400 systems. Use the experience to develop tactics and strategies against the S-400 whether in form of development of next generation anti-radiation missiles, standoff munitions and decoys. Then impart the tactics developed as a result throughout the forces. Use the Israeli experience and their handling of the S-300 threat.

Ever heard of a thing called anti radiation missile? We have some of the best in the world.
But for that we will have to fly our aircrafts within the kill zone of s400 I.e 100 to 160 Kms and they may have to cross multiple spider and Barack 8 Batteries and obviously the su30mki. I can't put my precious pilots and fighter jets in such a peril. If I can destroy or kick it away with say long range mlrs with smart munitions or by other means without endangering the pilots and the aircrafts and we should remember that modern radars are well equipped to deceive arms I'll leave this task to our artillery and or strategic forces rather than giving it to our air force.my point of view I maybe wrong though.

I hope so but I am not so sure for that we will have to read the sale agreement between the two nations e.g we need a few j 16s badly but china can't sell it to us despite the fact that other than airframe design there is nothing Russian in it and that airframe design was originally the intellectual property of ussr not even today's russia so if you get my point you will understand my apprehensions too.

Do you think Russia will allow this? Perhaps not.

China itself see value in S-400 and would not want to make it redundant.

In March 2017, General David Perkins of the U.S army bragged in a military symposiumabout the success which one of the “close U.S ally” had in shooting down a $200 dollar, purportedly hostile, quadcopter with the U.S made PATRIOT missile defense system. He did not name the particular country nor went into further specifics of the incident. But the mention itself, that a $200 worth toy grade drone was shot with a $3 million missile, was enough to raise a key question about the economic exchange disparity, which apparently provided a solution to penetrate through the highly-sophisticated Anti-Ballistic Missile Defense Systems such as the PATRIOT PAC-3 itself.

During Cold War, when both the United States of America and the Soviet Union possessed the megaton yielding Nuclear weapons, to inhibit the threat of a nuclear war, “The Doctrine of Mutual Annihilation” was agreed upon by both the countries. Under this doctrine, an Anti-Ballistic Missile Defense treaty was signed between U.S President Ronald Reagan and Leonid Brezhnev of Soviet Union which allowed only two sites in each country to have the cover from incoming ballistic missiles. But neither of them halted the testing of the better versions of anti-ballistic missile defense systems which is the reason why today the United States of America and Russia possess and sell the best available umbrella from the incoming ballistic missiles and enemy aircraft.

Terminal High Altitude Air Defense System (THAAD), PATRIOT PAC-3 and Aegis Naval System are the high-tech sophisticated systems which have a great success rate of intercepting a short-to-intermediate range projectile while on the other hand, Russia has S-400 and S-500 systems, as competitive as the U.S ones. The balance in South Asia was disturbed when India announced last month that it was going ahead to buy S-400 defense system in a deal worth $5 billion USD, despite the threat of U.S sanctions.

The development was particularly worrisome for Pakistan, a country which always has to follow the lead toward aggressive military ambitions of its foe India. Consequently, the opportunity cost is the economic and social growth of its people. Pakistan has never had the hostile or aggressive military policy to instigate the arms race with India for one simple reason; it cannot afford to do so by any means.


Why is Indian S-400 such a big deal?
Russian made S-400 system like any other ballistic missile defense system consists of a tracking, guidance and interception mechanism. A radar, which is the part of the assembly, tracks the incoming object which could either be a missile or an enemy aircraft within a range of 400 km and an altitude of 36 km, making it an endothermic defense module. After the flight path is analyzed, it fires its own missile which works on kinetic kill mechanism and neutralizes the incoming threat by colliding with it.

These specs make the system capable enough of intercepting Pakistan’s elite fighter jet F-16 which has a ceiling height of 50,000 ft. or 15 km and any missile in the arsenal. Since Pakistan is a smaller country, in size and resources, as compared to its adversary India, it has to take measures to match the Indian superiority in terms of military hardware to ensure its safety. The cost of an anti-ballistic system, ignoring the fact that first Pakistan has to find a potential supplier, which could most likely be Russia offering the same S-400 system, and then coping with subsequent sanctions, is too high especially in the state country’s economy is in.

When Indian procurement of S-400 is juxtaposed with the 4++ generation Rafale jets it has ordered from France, it gives the country absolute air superiority over Pakistan. But Pakistan seems to have developed an economical response to India’s air cover which is most likely to make its impermeable airspace more penetrable even with such a high-end protective system.

MIRV – Pakistan’s Counter
The key technology which both USA and Russia were able to attain during the Cold War that ultimately forced them to sign an Anti-Ballistic Missile treaty was Multiple Independently Targetable Re-entry Vehicle or MIRV system. MIRV is basically a missile which has multiple missiles encapsulated in its pointed tip and upon re-entering the Earth’s atmosphere during its flight course, each missile leaves the body of the main frame and approaches its own target independently.

The ABM defense systems detect the incoming missile, which carries more missiles in its body, as a single target and launches a single interceptor to destroy it in the terminal phase of flight. With the ability to launch multiple warhead projectiles, MIRV drastically reduces the effectiveness of an Anti-Ballistic Missile Defense system. In January 2017, Pakistan became the first country to successfully test a Multiple Independently Targetable Re-entry Vehicle system, ABABEEL, in South Asia. A feat which was confirmed by the Defense Intelligence Agency of the U.S military makes Pakistan the only state in South Asia so far to have this technology.

An ABM radar assembly can detect the income hostile object violating the airspace of the country, but it cannot simply tell the type and nature of the incoming threat. To reduce the risk of interception for the actual warhead, ABABEEL can successfully be used as a decoy to engage as many missiles S-400 shoots as possible. The exact statistics to depict the cost of each missile are not available, but a unit is expected to be around $0.8-1 million dollars. In this way, Pakistan can use its low yielding, low-cost conventional missiles to devour expensive S-400 interceptor missiles.

If not anything, it at least creates a doubt, effectively barring India’s Anti-Access/Area Denial (A2/AD) capabilities, for their usage since the operation is economically too risky unless it is taking down a serious target, say an F-16 or a nuclear missile coming its way. But it is obviously not a long-term solution as it does not provides the shelter from incoming missiles flying their way in toward Pakistan. Recently Pakistan has deployedChinese made Low-to-medium Altitude Defense system, LOMADS LY-80, which has the interception range and altitude of 40 km and 18 km respectively. The specifications of the system are certainly a no-match for S400 system and it is hardly able to meet requisite needs.

Therefore, sooner or later, Pakistan has to go for a more sophisticated, at the same time more expensive, system. As the cooperation between Pakistan and Russia is stretching across new dimensions and the relations with the United States are deteriorating, former makes a more viable option when Pakistan decides to induct a new ABM system. Apparently, India has also realized that a system which will soon be integrated into the defense of the country after spending $5 billion dollars is not expendable on just about anything which violates its airspace.


It is only possible if Pakistan inducts an Anti-Ballistic Missile Defense System of its own which could match the sophistication of S-400, or else India will always have, at least, the psychological superiority of imperviousness.

The example at the start, of the quadcopter-PATRIOT standoff, is the perfect illustration of why it is economically inefficient or even counterproductive. It is probably the reason why India recently tested the first indigenously made medium range Air Defense Systemfor the purpose of using against the decoys. Soon India will also be reaching the feat of acquiring MIRV technology. Hence Pakistan should proactively channel the resources for a locally manufactured defense system, on top of acquiring a high-end foreign one later on.

Pakistan is relying heavily on the tactical nuclear weapons which have a limited yield to respond to the “Cold Start Doctrine”, The Indian Army’s New Limited War Doctrine. But the use of tactical nuclear weapons is hindered in practicality by one of the crucial clauses of India’s Nuclear Doctrine which advocates “massive, broad scale and terrible” nuclear response in case of a nuclear attack. So far the possession of nuclear weapons has been a major deterrent to a large spectrum conflict between two countries but the induction of S-400 system has initiated yet another race to achieve ultimate superiority which could be used for coercion.

“The Doctrine of Mutual Annihilation”, which prevented a nuclear escalation for decades during the cold war, could serve as the illustration for both India and Pakistan leading to 1972 like American-Soviet ABM treaty. However, it is only possible if Pakistan inducts an Anti-Ballistic Missile Defense System of its own which could match the sophistication of S-400, or else India will always have, at least, the psychological superiority of imperviousness.

lol, people forget that India is buying SR, MR, LR, S400 is only for long Range Missiles and Provide to Secure Air Ban over PAK.

India will use its SR , MR and LR SAM for shooting drone. For author only S400 is SAM exist in India. lol

I am not talking about nuclear war and the so called BMDs are not even 50% effective they can be circumvented I am talking about a conventional solution to/against a conventional defensive weapon. In this case an overrated aggrandised sam system.
BMDs are for IRBM only, not ICBM. Indian BMD like AAD is for MRBM only (<3000km). As of now, India can intercept missiles with range of 2000km and intends to develop it till it ca intercept 3000km missiles. S400 can intercept missiles with range of 4000km.

agree but bro we need effective deplomcy. we can do this even with one sub roaming around indian ocean . there will be no war. if there is one and i know what will be out come for both countries. so conventional or unconventional. these weapons are symbol of power. have you noticed what happens with indian diplomacy after we kick out their submarine near our waters i think year back.. submarines are ultimate with ababeel delivery system.. they can not defend their whole land and nor we.. loopholes are easy to find.. needed smart operators
No one cares for your submarines. India can make its own submarines in any number to counter Pakistani ones. Also, Pakistani submarines have to surface every now and then to refuel which will make it easier to detect and track.

is not reliable protection against blastic missiles..period..even united states system that relies on real time accurate data from gazillions of sensors is not reliable against single war head let alone MRIV
Every SAM, BMD system uses multiple sensors. Also, the kill probability is never 100%. Even if it is 60%, firing of 2 missiles will make it 85%. That is good enough to reduce the number of hits by about 85%

A column of PLAAF JWS01 UCAV launch vehicles were on display during the parade celebrating the 90th Anniversary of PLA, each carrying 6 UCAVs. Previously acquired secretly from Israel in 1994, this highly classified UCAV (called Harpy) was unknown to the West until 2004 when they were returned to Israel for upgrade. Developed by IAI in the early 90s, Harpy is the first UCAV which features a passive radar seeker and can be used as a long-range anti-radiation weapon to attack enemy radar stations. Its range is 500km, max speed 185km/hr, warhead 32kg. Several Harpy can operate in a pack for coordinated attack. One Harpy UCAV launch vehicle can carry 18 box launchers. In 2004 Chinese were trying have them upgraded by Israelis but the attempt was discovered and subsequently blocked by the US government. All UCAVs were returned to China without any upgrades. Images from April 2011 suggested that Chinese have developed their own version of Harpy (JWS01 or K/JWF-1?) by reverse-engineering which likely started around 2005. Two new types of seeker with slightly different sizes have been identified (Type I & Type II?), suggesting different homing frequencies. However the launch vehicle now carries only 6 launchers instead of 18. The latest news (February 2017) suggested that the UCAV has been offered for export as ASN-301, which features two pairs of retractable direction-finding antenna blades pointing straight above and below the main body. The radar homing seeker has a search range of 25km and a frequency coverage of 2-16GHz.

The solution is simple, just inundate the enemy air space with cheap missiles in the first strike so that the S400s are all used up and then obliterate them with the real ones in the second strike.
Why will India wait till Pakistan does second strike? When someone is firing at you, will you simply hope that all bullets will deflect off your bullet proof jacket or will you fire back?

Just because you dn't like something does not mean it is not like that. AAD is capable of intercepting 2000km MRBM. S400 will not be used for BMD purpose as BMD requires interceptor to be on the site itself whereas S400 will be used near the borders to defend against CM, drones and planes.

None can intercept even 5 ICBM properly. ICBM is too fast for that.

But, MRBM and IRBM can be intercepted. I don't have much video of S400 intercepting BM but only speculated based on its tracking its ability. Also, S400 will have to be deployed on the target itself for intercepting BM whereas India will deploy them near borders and hence the S400 of India is not for BMD role. So, not to worry much about S400 acting as BMD

However, Indian AAD can defence against the MRBM missiles. And it has been a huge success
