Pakistanis register 100,000 complaints against ‘creaking infrastructure’ through official app

November 22, 2018

ISLAMABAD: A mobile app launched by the Pakistan government to allow the public to voice their grievances over creaking infrastructure has been inundated with responses.

A government official said Thursday that more than a hundred thousand complaints had been made through the official app, which launched only a month ago.

The application was intended to offer swift resolution for basic civic problems being faced by Pakistanis.

But the government has been overwhelmed with responses, particularly about problems in public services like energy, health and education, said the prime minister’s Special Assistant Iftikhar Durrani.

Talking to reporters in Islamabad, Durrani said around 84,000 complaints were yet to be addressed, while around 16,000 had been resolved.

Around 4,000 more complaints were received by Pakistanis living abroad, while 96 percent of those who downloaded the app were men.

Prime Minister Imran Khan came to power in July with a populist slogan of “Naya Pakistan” (“New Pakistan“) — promising to root out corruption.

“Our state institutions will be so strong that they will stop corruption. Accountability will start with me, then my ministers, and then it will go from there,” Khan said in his first speech after coming to power in July.

But Pakistan — which has a population of around 207 million and around 150 million mobile phone users — is known for sluggish bureaucracy, with incompetence and corruption rampant.

Are the women of Pakistan not even capable of using a mobile app? Maybe they are afraid of harassment since you have to disclose personal details in order to use the app.

Excellent, its important to audit these projects. This is how our system will eventually improve, rather than brushing them under carpet we need to expose them more.

Any Data on what these 100,000 Complaints are about?
Data Analysis of the complaints can point out specific failures in providing services, and those gaps can be targeted. If People see an improvement to their quality of life over these 5 years of the PTI government, they will be willing to vote for them again in 2023, and hopefully this time get a majority on their own and in all four provinces. PTI needs a team on these issues across the nation.

In some areas neglected by other politicians for decades, focusing on systemic neglect can help win over die-hard PPP and PML-N voters, as well as those that go for the smaller parties.

PTI should also go through Every National Assembly Seat, especially where it lost and show the people that the government is a government for all Pakistanis. Finding a way to provide services badly needed ("demand side growth") will also help solve the jobs crisis. Efficencies in government operations can pay for these added services and the virtous cycle of money circulating in these under serviced areas will show an improvement in the lives of the people.

Then these complainants will address themselves with proper management, and the incentive that addressing them will maintain PTI in power.

What's a "creaking" infrastructure?
