Paramilitary troops Tuesday conducted house-to-house search operation in parts of Pakistan's largest city Karachi after recent incidents of violence which claimed nearly 30 lives, officials said.

Karachi, also the county's port city of nearly 17 million people, has been under the grip of political and ethnic in recent days.

Several activists of rival ethnic and political groups and a TV reporter were among those killed in the fresh wave of targeted attacks. Some known criminal gangs, land mafia and drug smugglers are also involved in the violence.

The government had been under mounting pressure to take action to restore peace in Karachi, the capital of Sindh province.

Pakistani Interior Minister Rehman Malik said partial curfew will also be imposed in sensitive parts of Karachi in the wake of operation against those behind the ethnic violence and criminal activities. The authorities has banned pillion riding on motorcycles for a week.

Paramilitary force or Rangers launched door-to-door search operation in the Orangi town area Tuesday morning and detained nearly 300 people for questioning. Residents said that about 600 people had been taken into custody. Several of the detainees were freed after they proved identification, police sources said.

Contingents of Rangers had been on alert during the search operation and the people were asked to stay indoors. All markets, hotels and patrol stations were closed in the area. Residents said that children could not go schools as the people all the areas were sealed.

The troops had cordoned the areas and vehicles were also banned from entry during the operation and motorcycle riders were facing ID checks.

Officials said that more search operations are planned in other sensitive areas in the coming days.

Residents had mixed reaction to the operation. Some welcomed the move and others said the operation has caused problems for the general public.

Karachi has a history of political, ethnic and religious violence but peace and stability in the city is important for Pakistan because it is the country's main commercial hub with the main Stock Exchange.

The powerful Urdu-speaking Mutahida Qaumi Movement or MQM and the ethnic Pashtoon "Awami National Party" (ANP) accuse each other of violence. The MQM moved a bill in the National Assembly on Monday, seeking the country to cleanse the country of illegal weapons and ammunition. The ANP wants a military operation in Karachi. Both are partners in the ruling coalition led by Pakistan Peoples Party of President Asif Zardari.Source:Xinhua
