Centre for Pakistan and Gulf Studies (CPGS) President Senator Sehar Kamran congratulated the entire nation, admired the work of earnest scientists and devoted officials of Strategic Plans Division (SPD) on successfully conducting the test of Babur-3 Submarine Launch Cruise Missile (SLCM). She said that by achieving the sea based deterrence capability, now Pakistan was in club of few countries which have nuclear triad to secure their interests in the region. She stated that Pakistan already has ground as well as air launched cruise and ballistic missile system and with the addition of Babur-3 SLCM, the country not only increased the deterrence credibility but also has reduced the chances of any conventional adventure i.e. limited war in the form of Cold Start Doctrine or so called surgical strikes against Pakistan.

While discussing the significance of the SLCM, Senator Kamran said that now Babur-3 has restrained India from initiating the first strike on Pakistan. She said this was because of the fact that the submarine launched cruise missile has the ability to launch a credible second strike capability. She said this successful test has augmented the nuclear deterrence and prevented the enemy from taking any irrational act of war.

Senator Sehar Kamran stressed that it was need of hour that Pakistan focused on manufacturing and developing nuclear submarines to make deterrence more effective, credible and reliable in order to counter India’s ambition to nuclearise the Indian Ocean by inducting nuclear submarines, aircraft carries and presence of other extra regional forces in the area. Pakistan should take all necessary measures to secure its vital interests in the region, she added

How much expertise do we have in light water reactors?

Does she know?

We have a lot of "expertise" which can rapidly , with the right resources, materialise a sub light water reactor. Our defence committee knows our capabilities and technologies. We just need a strategic paper, a political stamp and military implementation.

An R&D organisation has been working on the development of a miniaturised nuclear power plant in collaboration with PAEC that can fit a submarine size and work in a submersible structure / vehicle. What I heard was they had been successful in developing but due to unavailability of the funds and change of priorities an indigenuous nuclear sub program was not launched and rather Pakistan went with 8 (6 + 2) S-20 Chinese submarines.

The people who make decisions in Pakistan mostly undermine indigenous development unless and until it becomes inevitable since 1) they get hefty kickbacks which ensures a good life post retirement and 2) they do not trust the nation's talent and 3) they lack the ability to think in the longer terms and ad hoc-ism is the rule. Pakistan's nuclear program, JF17 thunder and all other indigenous programs were started when embargoes and sanctions or political difficulties made them inevitable.

Very good we should go for all latest technologies in defense field especially in the field of nuclear weapons reactors latest devices, designs, labs, testing and launch pads submarines and underwater drones equipped with smaller nuclear devices as a punching thumb for our enemy.

okay so I have a very stupid question; how hard is it to convert a diesel submarine to a nuclear submarine. Theoretically, isn't it just a matter of replacing the diesel engine and batteries with a nuclear reactor?

Once again, I know it's a stupid question but I'm no authority on naval tech so excuse my ignorance:close_tema:

I do not mean to discourage anyone. but the industrial chain is simply too long for Pakistan, ~8000 factories to support such business.
A AIP submarine with Babur 3 is almost perfect for Pakistan.
But Pakistan can always try.

Why do we need 8000 factories to develop a nuclear sub?

What parkistan friends like is good luck, just say something make them happy, they enjoy it

True.
Even they won't do it. but still they will get offended if you say "You can't do this" to them...

We wan't to live in a delusion that we can do anything. it's just, for now we don't wan't to do it. :D
