Pakistani Officers Visit USS Elrod

USS ELROD, At Sea (NNS) -- Pakistani naval officers assigned to Pakistani frigate PNS Babur (F182) spent five days underway on board USS Elrod (FFG 55) learning about U.S. Navy operations and participating in shipboard events.
Elrod rendezvoused with Babur near Karachi, Pakistan, to embark the officers Sept. 5.
During their time aboard Elrod, the four officers lived and operated with the crew and were involved in events such as weapons demonstrations, emergency drills, and an underway replenishment. They shared their own experiences and knowledge with the U.S. crew while learning about U.S. Navy operations.
"Being able to talk with our Pakistani guests was an enlightening experience," said Lt. j.g. Matthew Lopez, USS Elrod navigator. "I was surprised how similar our two navies were and how much we could relate to one another."
This exchange of personnel and ideas are part of an ongoing cooperative relationship between the Pakistani and U.S. navies to increase maritime security in the Gulf of Aden and Northern Arabian Sea.
"I learned a great deal from the few days that they were aboard, and I'm confident that the visit helped to increased cooperation between our two countries' navies," Lopez added.
The Pakistani navy plans to purchase seven Oliver Hazard Perry-class frigates for its fleet, and currently maintains a training detachment in the U.S.
Ship visits provide real-world experience for those Pakistani naval officers who will potentially operate, maintain and serve on this class of warship.
USS Elrod, homeported in Norfolk, Va., is on a regularly scheduled deployment to the 5th Fleet area of responsibility supporting maritime security operations and theater security cooperation efforts. Elrod is currently assigned to Combined Task Force (CTF) 151, established in January 2009 in order to deter, disrupt, and suppress piracy, protecting maritime vessels of all nationalities and securing international freedom of navigation.
