In Europe poles and germans are different. The question is how are they perceived in smaller numbers in societies abroad. With one of my previous employers we classified all European immigrant engineers as European. That included a couple of Italians, a frenchman, a german and a polish. It is not like any of them protested

You just hit upon the real word 'perception', but in this case let's qualify it with 'self-perception' cause outsiders don't perceive any difference.

I qualify as a Bangladeshi as all get out and will always remain one (no matter how many Zegna suits and Bruno Magli shoes I buy).

One can go down to Jackson Heights any day and see if Bangladeshis have any 'airs' about anything - no matter how wealthy. They don't.

I guess 'soitain' folks have developed shpilkis in their genechtagazoink and need to assure themselves as they are (ahem) different (bettah).
