Pakistani media publish fake WikiLeaks cables attacking India

Utterly shameful act on part of whosoever made it up. I could live with The Nation publishing it but Jang group doing it means they have lost brains at the top as well. Couple of urdu news channels also picked it up which is a sorry state of affairs on part of the editorial judgment of these outlets. Or perhaps they just couldn't resist the opportunity to bash India and forgot to verify the cables. Journalists are supposed to be objective and this act of theirs has shed bad light on the media in Pakistan. There must be some sort of penalty for this irresponsibility considering it's impact.

it was just a matter of time before this news report came out..............the journalists anywhere are corrupt and i would not be highly surprised if the pakistani media has done this to appease the pak govt and in return received tax benefits........or else other benefits like sight seeing tours ,,,vacations bla bla bla.....so much for media jingoism....

Has there been any clarification from these media outlets after the Guardian report?

In the December 9 edition of The Express Tribune, a report was published on page 8 under the caption “WikiLeaks: What US officials think about the Indian Army”. It now transpires that the story, which was run by a news agency, Online, was not authentic.

The Express Tribune deeply regrets publishing this story without due verification and apologises profusely for any inconvenience caused to our valued readers.

At least they showed some class in not only apologising unreservedly but also linking a report from the Guardian critical of them. Wish The News would do the same.

Thanks Gunner.
It is indeed commendable to publish this news admitting its mistakes. This will uphold the trust with the media after their slip up.

**** happens !!!
now i know, why pakistanis hate us.

Wish The News would do the same.

ISLAMABAD, Dec 10, 2010 (AFP) - A leading Pakistani newspaper on Friday retracted a front-page story that used fake US diplomatic cables to brand Indian generals "genocidal" and accuse New Delhi of sponsoring militants.

But on Friday The News wrote that "on further inquiries, we learnt from our sources that the story was dubious and may have been planted".

The News said the report originated from some local websites "known for their close connections with certain intelligence agencies".

A variety of Pakistani newspapers carried the report on Thursday, crediting the story to the Islamabad-based Online news agency, where a receptionist on Friday refused to put through telephone calls from AFP to senior editors.

Usually, such things happen in countries where there is very less hope or where some type of fake bravado exists in culmination with delusional conspiracy theories. Pakistan has both and there is no doubt that such articles were written for domestic consumption, as a feel good factor shielding their own fallacies and convulsion with Jihadi organizations and justifying their own wrong doings, and putting the blame of the internal mess on outside forces rather than on agencies inside the country!

^ same can be said about some Indian media as well. The trick is to filter out the information that you believe is true... It is hard at first, but once you get used to it you can clearly see what is what.

dirty work of the green media ......... how low could they stoop

We have to give credit where it's due. They have the courage to accept their mistake and apologize. Reputable english language media (not the urdu press, the nation, etc) of pakistan has the legacy being honest. Lets move on.
