An Indian Supreme Court judge and a group of eminent citizens of India, approached by the Aman ki Asha initiative of the Jang and Times of India groups, have moved into swift action to try and secure the release of Dr Muhammad Khalil Chishty, a Pakistani prisoner in India. He is 77 and in failing health at Ajmer Prison Hospital. The story of Dr Chishty, once a well-respected virologist in Karachi, is an especially tragic one. He had been implicated in a case that is widely believed to be false while he was visiting Ajmer in 1992 to care for his sick mother, and after a quarrel with neighbours. (An inquiry by Indian citizens "reveals that he was falsely implicated"). He was finally convicted by a sessions court in Ajmer last December, nearly 20 years later. Throughout this time, held in detention and under strict surveillance at his family house near Ajmer, he had never missed a hearing or failed to follow court orders.

One of Dr Chishty's daughters wrote to Aman ki Asha seeking to bring about his return. Aman ki Asha approached Justice Markandey Katju, the same Indian Supreme Court judge in response to whose appeal Pakistan had freed Indian prisoner Gopal Das who had spent two decades in jail. The judge set in motion the legal effort for Dr Chishty's release. The appeal by prominent Indians who have taken up the case with zeal is a follow-up and continuation of this effort. They have sent a letter to the Indian president urging the release of the aged prisoner. It is signed by veteran journalist Kuldip Nayar, film-maker Mahesh Bhatt, journalist Jatin Das, retired Indian naval chief Admiral L. Ramdas, and Kavita Srivastava of the Peoples Union for Civil Liberties, an NGO that has been trying to help Dr Chishty over the past many years. It is hoped that the Indian media too will highlight the case and press for an old man to return home "alive" as his daughter put it. The case of Dr Chishty had once received wide attention. Through the years he has essentially been forgotten, in his own country as well as in India. The campaign now launched brings the case into the limelight once more. This is the first stage in securing the release of the doctor. Humanity demands that he be set free. No purpose can be served by holding a sick man in a foreign jail. It must be hoped also that the recent thaw in ties between Pakistan and India can work in favour of Dr Chishty, as it did in the case of Gopal Das. He has been convicted by a lower court and a higher court may overturn the sentence. The one thing Dr Chishty does not have, as his daughter said, is time. We hope that the Indian courts will order his release on humanitarian grounds. The effort being made for the release of Dr Chishty points to the immense importance of groups and people coming together for a cause. We believe such initiatives can make a big difference in the lives of individuals when they inspire people to work to mitigate the plight of their fellow human beings. And if it is true of individuals -- and if initiatives like Aman ki Asha are owned and embraced by civil society and political leaders -- there is every reason to believe that the two great nations of the subcontinent will benefit immensely from a more collective and social expression of the basic humanity we share with each other.

I would like to start this thread which will be about all the things that are being done to eliminate the hatred between the two countries. I'm not sure if this thread will have a long life but let us see...

I would like to give some examples about the kind of news article that should be posted, please see below:

Cricket (when Pak plays in India or vice versa)
President, PM, etc visiting each other's country.
Releasing fishermen belonging to each other's country
Helping each other in the time of need, such as natural disaster
Talks about increasing Trade etc.

The topics should not be restricted to the examples mentioned above. Well, I guess I made my point clear.

PM Ashraf thanks his Indian counterpart

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf thanked his Indian counterpart Dr Manmohan Singh for condolence on the loss of precious lives in fire incidents in Karachi and Lahore.

In his letter, the Prime Minister said "Your kind thoughts and expression of solidarity with the families of the victims and the people of Pakistan in this hour of grief are, indeed a source of great strength and solace for us."

High time for Pakistan, India to end differences: Wattoo

ISLAMABAD: Minister for Kashmir Affairs and Gilgit-Baltistan, Mian Manzoor Ahmad Wattoo on Friday said it is high time for both India and Pakistan to end their differences to start a new relationship of cooperation and friendship.

The Minister, who is on a visit to India, said this while addressing a function at a college in the native town of Chief Minister, Indian Punjab, Parkash Singh Badil.

He is on a four-day private visit along with his family members on the invitation of Parkash Singh Badil, said a message received here.

Wattoo said Pakistan's government is eager to develop friendly relations with its neighbors, especially India and foreign offices of both the countries have taken concrete steps towards the fulfillment of this goal.

First time in the history, the visa policy is made people friendly and efforts are underway to strengthen trade ties between the two countries, he said.

Wattoo reminded that to increase the trade volume between Pakistan and India, proposals to open up Head Sulemanki Border are under consideration in Pakistan and President Asif Ali Zardari had issued direction to Foreign Office to work out on the possibilities.

He asked the Chief Minister, Indian Punjab to persuade his central government to make necessary arrangement to open up the Head Sulemanki Border, saying that it will not only benefit people of Central and Southern Punjab in Pakistan but will also open up new avenues of trade for the States of Eastern Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan on Indian side.

On the occasion, Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badil appreciated this proposal and assured his full cooperation in this respect.

The people present on the occasion strongly favored the proposal of opening the Head Sulemanki Border and applauded Mian Manzoor Wattoo for this offer.

Wattoo said that a strong democratic government is working in Pakistan and President Zardari is head of the largest and most popular party of the country.

"We are moving in right direction to build a strong Pakistan by improving our friendly ties in the region," Wattoo added.

Earlier, upon his arrival, Principal of Girls College welcomed the Minister. The students presented a show of pure Punjabi culture.

Mian Manzoor Wattoo also visited College hostel and appreciated the facilities provided to the students.

He also commended the Chief Minister for establishment of such a high standard educational institution for girls in his native village.

During his stay in Chandigarh, Wattoo also met with various cabinet members.
