@Bong @Thorough Pro All the days of Eid are holidays in India, plus Muharram, which you guys probably don't have in Bangladesh or Pakistan.

Krishna Janmaashtami
- 2014-08-17

This holiday marks the birth of Krishna, an incarnation of the Hindu god Vishnu. Celebrations include dramatic productions based on the life of Krishna, dancing, singing and chanting holy mantras.

Durga Puja (Vijaya Dasami)
- 2014-09-30

Stretching over five days, with the last day being a national holiday, this Hindu celebration commemorates Lord Rama’s victory over the evil demon Ravana. In Bangladesh, celebrations are held throughout the country, with Mymensingh being a popular gathering place for the festival. In 2014, Durga Puja will take place from September 30 to October 4.

These are the BD hindu holidays. Dipaboli isnt a big occassion for bengali hindus. Is it?

Vesak/Wesak/Vesakha (Buddha Day)
- 2014-05-13

Also referred to as Buddho Pumima, this Buddhist holiday is a celebration of the birth, life, enlightenment and passing away of Gautama Buddha. It is determined by the traditional lunar calendar in Bangladesh. It is a time for Buddhists to gather at the temples, hoist the Buddhist flag, sing hymns, and offer flowers, candles and incense – the latter being a reminder than life is transient, and as flowers fade and candles and incense burn out, so too life withers and passes away.
Bôṛodin (Christmas Day)
- 2014-12-25

Christmas is the celebration of the birth of Jesus of Nazareth.

These are other holidays of Buddha and Christian.

Dipaboli is the second biggest puja for Bengali Hindus.

Where is fatwa? I am not a Mufti so my opinion is ONLY an opinion and not fatwa. Besides, you should be happy that I wish them to revert back to the religion of their forefathers. The Indian Muslims form 13.4% of Indian population. Wont it be great if they revert back to Hinduism and Hindus compose over 97% of the total population? Think about the harmony and peace resulting from this. No more 'love jihad', no more cow slaughter, no more communal riots. What is wrong in this suggestion? Besides Arya Samaj and later RSS has been working on this 'Shuddhi' movement from early 1900s. Seeing the photos you have posted, I must say that they have at least partly achieved their goal. These Indian Muslims are somewhere in between the two religious beliefs and the only solution of their confusion would be to have them converted to Hinduism.

There is no confusion, even many Hindus go to Pirbabas, Dargahs and Mazars in India, I told you it would be difficult for you to understand unless you are an Indian.

There - labelled. Branded as murtids :D

It is perhaps in the best interest of these so-called Muslims to get converted to Hindus once and for all.
Again! :P Why not let them decide...oh wait, free will is something some people are used to.

And since I smell something burning, here is some more fuel to add here -

These incidents are very common actually. Intermixing with respect goes both ways.

Just my 2 cents.. I don't think there should be a public holiday for community that represents only a small proportion of the overall population. Optional holidays, yes. It would then be the prerogative of the individual to opt for one such optional holiday from the pool depending on his/her needs.

In India we have 3 national holidays.. Rep day, Ind day and Gandhi Jayanti, which must be observed by every state. However, while Diwali and Holi are major festivals throughout India and hence public holidays in most states, there are other major festivals confined to just a particular state. Lohri is celebrated with same vigor and fervor as diwali in Punjab/Haryana while Chhat is the major festival in Bihar/Eastern UP. Durga Puja is the most important festival for Bengalis while Ganesh Chaturthi has the same fan following in Maharashtra. It doesn't make sense to have a public holiday for, say, Chhat celebrations across India and that is where state holidays/optional holidays makes perfect sense.

Sindh, it seems, already designates diwali as an optional holiday (not sure about other states/provinces) and IMO it should serve the purpose well.

I am a non Hindu (by birth a Buddhist and practicing atheism), however to throw more light on Hinduism (which is actually an art of living rather than a religion) you will have to first understand that Hinduism is Sanatana Dharma, which has its own principles and few of the principles relevant here are as follows:

  • Sanatana Dharma recognizes that the greater portion of human religious aspiration has always been unknown, undefined, and outside of any institutionalized belief.
  • Sanatana Dharma thereby gives reverence to individual spiritual experience over any formal religious doctrine. Wherever the Universal Truth is manifest, there is Sanatana Dharma — whether it is in a field of religion, art or science, or in the life of a person or community. Wherever the Universal Truth is not recognized, or is scaled down and limited to a particular group, book or person, even if done so in the name of God, there Sanatana Dharma ceases to function, whatever the activity is called

Hopefully Pakistani Hindus will not now become a target for raising this demand!!
