A Pakistani Christian girl who was falsely accused of blasphemy has fled to Canada with her family, a Christian organisation says.

Rimsha Masih, aged 14, was detained in a maximum security prison for several weeks in August 2012, accused of burning pages from the Koran.

The case attracted widespread international concern.

Although charges against Rimsha were dropped, she and her family were forced into hiding after death threats.

Rimsha, who is believed to have learning difficulties, was arrested in a Christian area of the Pakistani capital, Islamabad, after a furious crowd demanded she be punished.

A local Muslim cleric has since been accused of framing her.

'Free'
The teenager has now settled in Canada with her family, although their exact location has not been made public.

A Christian activist in Canada told the BBC that the teenager was learning English and enjoying school. "They feel free," he said.

Critics have accused Pakistani courts of using the country's harsh blasphemy laws to target members of minority religions, according to the BBC's Orla Guerin, in Islamabad.

There seems little chance of a change in the law, our correspondent adds.

At least two prominent Pakistani politicians who had campaigned for a change in law have been killed in recent years.

Daily we hear news of pakistanis seeking asylum in other countries. Hindus going to India, Christians and lesbians going to west and even some muslims are seeking asylum in western countries.

Are you sure that fits in the same sentence?-

She is more than welcome to stay in Canada and enjoy the liberties of a true democracy however unlike Americanne, we also have Hate speech laws so she has to keep those in mind!

I really enjoy how free speech isn't paramount. It should have brakes upon it unless we want to be like America with hate groups like KKK and Westburo Baptist Church

I completely agree with you mon ami, Free speech is essential to federalism but it should have restriction in instances where it creates animosity or hatred among our population. So in the case of religion, we can criticize each other religion in a respectful manner in a forum or public place but at the same time we cannot simply just sludge mud towards other similar to Fox news or other notable outspoken americanne commentators.

These are petty issues people make to seek immigration to western countries. I thought UK was their favorite, which seems to be taken over by other countries.

There was and is widespread revulsion of the bloody cleric who accused her. Wonder what happened to him. He ought to have been punished. Moreover the whole deal was about getting the Christians to vacate valuable land. Seems like they got at least one family off in a very round about manner.

You don't understand free speech if you give the above examples as a reason to have it stifled. The British called Gandhi's speech as hate and incitement. It is not the KKK we are worried about on their speech, it is those who will use it to police falsely and be a tyrannical govt.

any who- it is working great for us...

It works terribly for you. Here in Canada we have no problem of overcensorship or undercensorship.

@JayAtl, answer this yank, Should Libel be allowed on television or speech that his highly homophobic or racial in nature that creates animosity among our general populace. Please keep the mumbo jumbo theories to yourselves, our system is working and there must be a reason why it has worked unlike the so called land of the free.

Canada has proper laws against hate speech. There are firm laws against religious discrimination as well.

You will not find the Copts here spreading hate against Islam, but just cross the border into Michigan, and you will find the same Copts with open air channels spreading outright bigotry, hate against Islam.

This is a fact.

Libel is for print. Slander is for speech. You can find both in the US. The problem with your argument is that unless libel or slander is directed against a particular person, there is no legal resolution. I can say right now that homosexuality is a sin against God and there is nothing the homosexual community can do against me. But if I say <famous politician/celebrity> is a homosexual and molested young boys, actually printed it out, and distributed my charge to the public, then I can be held legally accountable -- IF what I charged is untrue.

[edit]

“Limits on speech were incorporated in the criminal code in relation to treason, sedition, blasphemous and defamatory libel, disruption of religious worship, hate propaganda, spreading false news, public mischief, obscenity, indecency and other forms.
Libel involves publication in some permanent form like writing in a book, newspaper, and slander.[4] Defamation is a tort that gives a person the right to recover damages for injury due to publication of words that were intended to lower a person’s character.[5] The law therefore encourages the people in mass media to publish with caution, to avoid any forms of slander and to respect a person’s freedom of expression."

From wiki,

I cannot believe how you tolerate fox news to spread hate among the general populace and still act like it's freedom of speech when it really isn't. Do i need to show clips of Bill Oreilly and Shawn Hannity stirring up hate?
