Families continued to evacuate areas of Bara tehsil on Saturday as the army geared up for an operation against militants in the Khyber tribal region.
According to witnesses army was moving tanks and artillery to clear the troubled areas of the agency of militants.
The local administration had forewarned the residents of Tank, Malakdin Khel, Nala and other areas to leave their abodes in view of the imminent operation.

Militants had killed more than 10 security personnel in the past week after which a decision was made to launch the operation.
Bara Tehsil had earlier been cleared of militants but after suffering casualties in hundreds, several groups have again established their hideouts in Khyber Agency and are launching attacks against the security forces.

PESHAWAR: Pakistani security forces arrested 30 suspects and destroyed 30 militant hideouts in their latest sweep across Bara Tehsil of Khyber Agency on Saturday.

The security forces, due to increasing militant activities and attacks on security personnel, launched an operation in different parts of Khyber Agency earlier on Saturday.

Sources said that the operation was launched in the early hours of the morning in Landikas, Nala and Malakdin Khel area of the agency where fresh contingents of security personnel have taken position on the hill tops.

Earlier, residents of the area were asked to move out to safer places. Around 120 displaced families have reached the Jalozai internally displace person (IDP) camp, according to the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) and Parsa.

PDMA and Parsa authorities have asked the World Food Program (WFP), United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) to provide them with necessities, adding the donors responded positively.

Officials of PDMA and Parsa said most of the families wished to lives with their realities and rented house in different parts of the provincial capital rather than to move to the camps.

October 25, 2011. Tuesday

PESHAWAR: At least 18,000 people have fled their homes in Pakistan’s tribal district of Khyber, fearing a fresh onslaught of fighting between the army and paid militants, officials said Tuesday.

Families streamed out of the district, a flashpoint for Taliban and other violent groups on the Nato supply line into neighbouring Afghanistan, after the army ordered them to leave because of military action going on in the area.

Three Pakistani soldiers and 34 militants were killed in Khyber last week shortly before US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton arrived to step up pressure on Islamabad to do more to eliminate militants.

“Around 3,200 families, up to 18,000 people, have arrived in the Jalozai refugee camp and we are making arrangements to facilitate them,” Adnan Khan, spokesman for the disaster management authority of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, told AFP.

“We will provide them food for 15 days initially and also non-food items, including tents and utensils,” he said.

An administration official in Khyber said that many people were sheltering with relatives or in rented houses, rather than at the government camp.

“More than 20,000 people have left the area, many of them have gone to relatives’ homes in Peshawar and other peaceful cities while many others rented houses there,” said Mutahir Zeb, the top administrative official of Khyber.

The United Nations said the numbers were being verified, but warned that the figure could be inflated by some people taking advantage of the free food and shelter on offer.

“The provincial disaster management authority has registered 3,200 families and we are verifying this number,” Dunya Aslam Khan, spokeswoman for the UN refugee agency, told AFP.

“The estimated numbers of the displaced people are likely to come down by 10 per cent because normally people who are not affected by the disasters also join the displaced families just to enjoy the benefits and compensation,” she said.

Pakistan’s seven tribal districts on the Afghan border are rife with homegrown insurgency, and are strongholds of Taliban and al Qaeda operatives.

Eid security: 32 suspects arrested in Karachi

KARACHI: Ahead of Eidul Azha, 32 suspects were arrested from Karachi during raids in the last 48 hours, Express 24/7 reported on Sunday. Thirteen different types of weapons and two vehicles were also seized from the suspects.

The areas where the suspects were apprehended include Suleman Farsi society, Jumma Goth, Kati Pahari, Faqira Goth, Abul Hassan Isphani Road, Nayaabad and Maripur Road.

Rangers were on guard across the city ahead of Eid. Ranger’s officials said that they have devised a comprehensive security plan for Eidul Azha along with other law enforcing agencies.

As reported earlier, customers visiting cattle markets in other cities are concerned over the absence of security personnel in crowded places.

A visit to different cattle markets of Peshawar revealed that the police officials are yet to be deployed in these markets, even when the sale of cattle is in full swing.

“Peshawar is a sensitive area which has witnessed several acts of violence in the past and the absence of police in such a crowded place is a serious matter,” said Gul Rehman, a customer at the market.

“The police should tighten the security in the entire city to avoid any untoward incident during Eid holidays,” he added.

ISLAMABAD: Pakistani authorities on Monday foiled a plot by Tehrik-e-Taleban Pakistan (TTP) terrorists to target Pakistan Army General Headquarters, President's House and other vital installations by arresting one TTP activist.

Hitting back: Jhelum operation ends with little to show – The Express Tribune

LAHORE: Security forces launched a dragnet against suspected terrorists in Jhelum district that ended the same day, as law enforcers were unable to capture the men responsible for the killing of four intelligence operatives and their local informant on Friday.

The operation was launched in the Pir Chunbbal area of the Pind Dadan tehsil, about 25 kilometres from Jhelum district headquarters. At least three suspects were arrested, including the operator of a public telephone office, though it is unclear how they are connected to the case.

Meanwhile, two collaborators, as well as 30-odd militants involved in Friday’s incident were reported to be still at large. The only clue that the security forces have about the militants whereabouts – said to belong to the banned Lashkar-e-Jhangvi extremist group led by “Dr Arshad” – are two covers of cell-phone SIM cards, the numbers of which do not work.

Even though the spies killed belonged to the Military Intelligence, the dragnet itself was not conducted by the army. Local residents said that six vehicles of the Punjab Police Elite Force, including 25 personnel, as well as six local police officers were seen patrolling the neighbourhood of Friday’s attack.

“We are operating under orders from top officials,” said Sub-Inspector Akram, without clarifying what he meant.
