well the best tactic someone ever told me was to wrap yourself in the blanket and just lie next to the vehicle be it camels or jeeps.

the sand shifts quite easy and usually you need some sort of a bank so mostly they prefer the rising edge of a dune if things go extreme.

the only thing you are looking to protect are your extremities which are in danger of being sandblasted so your typical eyes nose and ears and the face if you are Brad Pitt lol but you get the idea
