Breaking: FWO to construct 46bn rupees Gilgit-Skardu Road
Gilgit-Skardu_Road.jpg

Gilgit: The Frontier Works Organisation (FWO) has been selected through a bidding process for construction of the Gilgit-Skardu Road. The project will be completed at a cost of 46bn rupees.

Speaker GBLA Fida Muhammad Nashad confirmed the report while talking to Pamir Times this evening.

The people of the four districts – Skardu, Ghanche, Shigar and Kharmang- in Baltistan Division had been demanding repair, upgrading and widening of the Jaglote-Skardu road, which is in a dilapidated condition due to natural disasters and wear and tear.

The road is an economic lifeline for the people of Baltistan, apart from being very important for defense and tourism.

Any idea how wide are they going to make it? I've told long tales of this road on the forum, how spectacular the scenery is and how an overwhelming sense of adventure hits you smack in the face as soon as you cross over Alam Bridge. Much welcomed and needed development for our Balti brothers. Although, if it was only me who would use the road, I'd keep it the same width as it is right now, for obvious old-school travel-junky reasons.

I wish these news reports would actually mention the specifics of the conservation efforts. Last I heard, the live-stock insurance scheme was paying dividends with regards to the Snow Leopard conservation. Any news of any new measures?

Although they are no substitute for building quality and affordable higher education institutes in the region, these awareness schemes are brilliant. Of the few talks I've had, the children and their families there are a little apprehensive of sending their young kids to southern universities due to a very many innocent reasons. A local school's principle from Barah was afraid that his son (who was brilliant enough to be accepted in the first stage of my uni's scholarship program) would not fit socially well within the uni. I had to give him examples of the Gilgiti and Balti students whom I knew in the uni and then sprinkle some personal guarantees to ease his fears. The passion for education is there, we must pave their way.

Almost half of surveyed households in 290 GB villages located in multiple hazard zones: FOCUS
CM.jpg

Gilgit, 15 Nov 2016: Focus Humanitarian Assistance (FOCUS) Pakistan, an agency of the Aga Khan Development Network, today released a report stating that over 46% of the households, in 290 villages covered in Gilgit-Baltistan, live in multiple hazard and risk areas, including over 8% in the high-risk category. Similarly, almost one-third of the schools, health facilities, prayer facilities and more than half of critical facilities such as bridges, telecom towers, and power stations are at direct risk of disasters.

The results were disseminated at a seminar on “Hazard Mapping & Risk Assessments” at the Serena Hotel, Gilgit organized to share with the Government of Gilgit-Baltistan key findings from the assessment, along with hazard and risk maps developed for over 290 villages. The hazard and risk maps will be used as a tool for planning and decision-making in the government’s annual budget cycle. Similar maps developed by FOCUS Pakistan for Chitral were shared at an event held in Chitral last month.

The seminar was attended by Chief Guest Mr. Hafiz Hafeez-ur-Rehman, Chief Minister for Gilgit-Baltistan, and members of the Gilgit-Baltistan Legislative Councils, government officials, representatives from the academia, DRR Forum, officials of non-governmental and civil society organizations.

Acknowledging the importance of disaster preparedness in the region, Chief Minister Hafiz-ur-Rehman said, “Gilgit-Baltistan is vital to the political and economic interests of Pakistan, being at a strategic location and bordering with China, Afghanistan and Tajikistan. It is therefore important to look at new opportunities for the interaction of natural resource management, policies and disaster risk reduction strategies, particularly in the context of decentralization reforms and distribution of mandates at village and community levels.”

For over two decades, FOCUS has been working closely with the government on disaster preparedness and response across Pakistan and implementing a comprehensive disaster risk management programme. It includes hazard and risk assessments with mapping of villages, creation of village based Disaster Risk Management plans, training of local communities and stockpiling of non-food items in remote and hazard prone villages.

Earlier, in her welcome remarks, Nusrat Nasab, Executive Officer of FOCUS Pakistan emphasized that early hazard identification and the development of risk assessments are pivotal for preparing a disaster risk reduction strategy. Highlighting FOCUS’ achievements in Gilgit-Baltistan she further added that, “most of the identified at-risk populations are those that are living along streams, river beds and high steep slopes, and downstream of Glaciers.”

Same as the rest, my cousin said they have only expended the roads a bit. Making them any wider is hardly possible.

Brilliant! Given the small population of the region, a small federal capital investment in education will do wonders.

Same as the rest, my cousin said they have only expended the roads a bit. Making them any wider is hardly possible.

True, in some respects. Remember the pre-expansion Karakoram? I mean it's been expanded too many times in sections since the 90s but remember the road when it was barely a two lane track? Something like the current Astore road? You must admit that it has come a long way since then and has changed the region for the better every step. Standing on the Raikhot Bridge gives one a very stark view of what it was and what it is now. Now although the Gilgit Skardu road offers much more challenging terrain than the KKH, I'm hoping they'll follow the KKH model and widen it in steps. I don't have a lot of hope for the Alam Bridge to Skardu stretch but beyond Skardu, at least till Khaplu, it shouldn't be any harder than the KKH to expand.
