RAWALPINDI:

Pakistan has about 850 billion cubic feet resources of coal at the moment but unfortunately the country has been facing an acute shortage of electricity which is badly affecting the national economy.

The available resources of the coal are equal to 400 billion barrels of oil and the government has been spending $4 billion annually to fulfill the demand of oil but such a costly demand can be easily fulfilled by utilizing only two percent of available resources of coal in the country.

According to a Rawalpindi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (RCCI) press release the figures were shared by the president of the chamber with the participants of seminar on Power Crisis here on Thursday.

The chamber president said the present resources of the coal could produce 20,000 megawatts electricity for 40 long years but the government had only been depending on hydro power to generate the electricity. Such an approach had demanded construction of new dams and water reservoirs that is not possible due to controversies and conspiracies.

The chamber office holder said new technology demanded a certain degree of moisture in the coal to make it usable and Pakistani coal naturally had that level of dampness but successive governments had failed to utilize the blessing of nature that had resulted in prolonged load-shedding.

The chamber urges the government to use the coal resources to generate electricity to meet the rising demand of power and provide relief to the industry so that the national economy could see an upward movement.

Pakistan is blessed with natural resources but expecting any good move by this government is like expecting "too much".

.
Where is shortage?for long time there aint any loadshedding here...so we dont have power shortage its just mismanagement

.
they keep saying it's gonna solve the problem and give statements it 's going to end by a certain date but they do nothing ! less talk more action !

.
Yes mashallah it is blessed with natual resources & brains as well follwed by everything else but when then the thiefs decide to actually put the money to work thats when we shall see a change its actually sad but its reality ! but again this is good news its not new news but again as i said $money$ is the name of the game no money no nothing hope the best for Pakistan!

. .
pakistan can sort this problem out
but our politicians have to open their eyes for that

.
The more pressure comes to the population. The more unrest spreads and the more chances will be there for Pakistan to be liberated and a bloody revolution to come which will solve the whole crisis of dependency and corruption.

.
Not a single initiative was taken by our government in all of 2008 towards Coal Power.

Democracy can be achieved only through experimentation (although we don't have much time) so it is a good example for voters in Pakistan and hopefully they will use their votes wisely the next time around.

I hope we can get another 5 yrs of Musharraf.

This morning, Raja Pervez Ashraf gave Dec 31st 2009 as the new date.

There are many words in english but the word be-gharet has its own flavor.

That is what these guys are. They come on TV and lie to the poor people of our beloved motherland.

While i am a firm believer that one cannot measure everything in terms of end results...it is obvious that the Government is just sitting and not doing anything to address a severe crisis despite giving cocksure statements like it will end by 2009...i hope by the end they did not imply that electricity will end.

Even if they had started some projects they could ask people to be patient but my god they are really really so be-gharet that it seems almost unreal.

And as far as environmental impact is concerned, there are many countries using the same grade of Coal to produce a lot of electricity so is should not be a burden on our conscience.

Whereas the yield of "energy per mass" of this coal is not of good grade, the sheer volume of deposits will ensure that we meet our needs for a long long long time.

Germany is using the coal of similar grade and is meeting 20-30% of its demands by coal based energy so we should not pay any heed to the opponents of the coal power project and start it right away.

Time is of the essence since we have encountered a major shortfall due to drop in hydroelectric power and severe hiccups in IPP production capability due to lack of payments.

I think even if it is fast tracked it may take 4-5 years to develop the mines and the power plant both.
