Pakistan withdraws opposition to India’s presence in Ankara talks

There is a quid pro quo here, India are beginning to wrap their minds around the idea of talking to the Talib - so lets see how this works or not - I'm persuaded that ultimately India will not be able to accept the Talib as an Afghan player and then we will see if there will be a Afghanistan -- however, I'm also persuaded that Afghanistan and the issue of captive Kashmir are linked:

Thanks for the news link on Hindu.
Can you share your opinion on the linkage of the Afghanistan and Kashmir issue?

I think all of us need to wrap our heads around the time scale of these issues. A few months back there was jubilation within Pakistan when India was kept out of Turkey meetings on Afghanistan and there were talks about how Indians will be sent back in body bags by Talibans when USA moves out in 2011. Well, looks like neither of that is happening any time soon. The soft power of reconstruction and connecting with the masses of Afghanistan is working pretty well in building relations in that part of the world. The magnitude to Indian presence and efforts in Afghanistan now seems to have became larger than what could be countered by the relationship between Turkey and Pakistan..

^^ Seems like Gilani and co. were flattered by Indians!!!
What did you feed them? They are on seventh heaven ever since!!!
Followed by Cameron!!!
Some thing is being cooked by international coalition.

Come out of conspiracies, this is called realpolitik, as they say in hindi- Jungle ke andar rehkar Hathi se dushmani nahi lete, Jungle is south Asia, and hathi...oh well. After all, how long can Pakistan keep destroying itself just by being anti-India.

Turkiye is close ot Pakistan, but not Pakistan's puppet -- and what if Pakistan actually do undertake operations in NW?? Actually, for my money much depends on events in Afghanistan

Esteemed ambassador Bhadrakumar has reported that Russia have offered SCO membership to Afghanistan -- Pakistan military desperately want US policy makers to see them as the "go to" people in Central and West Asia, but of course they are just plain wrong - with the a dwarf economy, US interests in Pakistan simply do not exist, as they do, say, in India or China. At the same time, the Pakistan establishment has locked itself in to a real bind in the captive Kashmir and in Punjab - so while there is talk of flexibility, we see no action to prepare the populations, which tells me that both sides are waiting on events in Afghanistan.

Its a good move by Pakistan alright so lets leave it to that hope good comes out of it for the sake of peace between both Pakistan & India .. but offcourse i know trolls, flamers and haters will loose sleep and make this in to sh_t thread unreal.

remember this is a gesture from pakistan and not india, waiting for positive news from across the border

There will never be any positive news from across the border. Our people are so naive. Indians hate the very existence of Pakistan. Lets say if Manmohan Singh does bring any positive news for Pakistan, the BJP RSS Shiv Sena will send threats to him and create havoc in the country over any positive news for Pakistan.

I agree that Manmahon Singh is a peace-loving man (maybe because he was born in Pakistan) but not other people in the Indian government. The Nehru/Sonia Gandhi family of the Indian congress are very anti-pakistan.

Many sides (or countries) are actually waiting on the events in Afghanistan, not just two.
Any continued volatility there (which is inevitable) is a matter of concern for Russia and China (among the larger players) apart from smaller ones.
And they will be drawn in to the scenario gradually, in an effort to resolve the simmer.

So will there be only one (or two) "go to" players? Remains to be seen.

The positive vibe from the people are evident in some members' signatures. But going that route will be labelled off topic trolling. Safe to assume that there are people on both sides both who want peace and others who want to drag on this animosity till their graves/pyres.

Unfortunately Congress is the best bet for you in today's era. You would fume at the other alternative.

If people of Pakistan have forgot why their elders choose for separate home land than they shall go and live with Indians for while.

Jinnah was a wise man, a gift of God.

its good that we r separate:lol:

Pakistan may simply use the event to politically pressure Hind on Kashmir, otherwise I don't see any benefit in withdrawing opposition. It could be Gaddari compromising strategic interest..

Friends, note we said much depends on events inside Afghanistan, we also said that based on these events, the supporters of the NA may choose to exercise the option of multiple political entities in what is now Afghanistan -- notice while Stanekzai says the Afghan govt is in talks with the US and that the US supports these, the US ambassador has this to say: "We are all 100 percent behind reintegration and reconciliation

Top Afghan Official Confirms Talks With Taliban
By ROD NORDLAND
April 6, 2011

KABUL, Afghanistan — A top Afghan official confirmed on Wednesday that the Afghan government had been in peace talks with the Taliban.

Mohammad Massoom Stanekzai, secretary of the High Peace Council and an adviser to the Afghan president, Hamid Karzai, said ongoing reconciliation talks had been under way with insurgents for some time.

“We’re in touch, we talk all the time, we’ve done a lot, we’ve sent representatives to their sides and they’ve sent representatives to our side,” said Mr. Stanekzai, who advises Mr. Karzai on reconciliation issues.

Asked if these were talks about talks, Mr. Stanekzai replied, “It is a step beyond that.”

The remarks came at a news conference to announce a $50 million donation from the American government to the High Peace Council to support reconciliation efforts with the Taliban.

Mr. Stanekzai’s remarks were the most public confirmation by a senior Afghan official that talks with the Taliban were under way. The United States is supporting the effort, Mr. Stanekzai said. The American ambassador, Karl W. Eikenberry, who was also present, concurred.

“We are all 100 percent behind reintegration and reconciliation,” Mr. Eikenberry said.

Taliban spokesmen have repeatedly maintained that the insurgents are not participating in talks with the Afghan government and that they will not do so until their precondition of a complete withdrawal of foreign forces was met. Claims to the contrary are part of American and Afghan government propaganda, they have said.

“For political reasons the antigovernment elements cannot confirm they are ready for talks with the Afghan government,” Mr. Stanekzai said. In keeping with Afghan government practice, he did not refer to the Taliban or related insurgents by their groups’ names, but rather with the term “antigovernment elements.”

He said much of what had been happening had necessarily been in secret. “When we do something, you won’t be able to see the results right away,” he said. “This is a process; it will take some time.”

Mr. Stanekzai and Mr. Eikenberry both emphasized that reconciliation efforts were led by Afghans. “We are in the front,” Mr. Stanekzai said. “The Americans are giving us financial support; if anything beyond that support is required, then their support would be there.”

However, there have been numerous reports of recent talks being carried out between the Taliban and other interested parties, including the United Nations, Britain, Germany, Norway and the United States.

“These peace efforts by the High Peace Council are just a cover,” said Mohammed Mohakik, a council member and a prominent Hazara leader. “The real efforts are going on behind the curtain and are not transparent

Like many non-Pashtun politicians, Mr. Mohakik is concerned about concessions that Mr. Karzai might make to cut a deal with the Taliban. The Taliban are largely Pashtun, as is the president and a plurality of the country’s population.

It has already been reported that Western diplomats, Taliban leaders and the Afghan government have been discussing means to start serious talks, including how to guarantee the safety and safe passage of Taliban participants, and where such talks could be held.

Arsala Rahmani, a former Taliban cabinet member who is now a member of the High Peace Council, said intermediaries had already won approval from Turkey to provide a venue.

Efforts to reach out to the Taliban have faltered badly in the past. Last year, the United States Congress earmarked $100 million for peace efforts, including reintegrating Taliban fighters. European countries pledged an additional $150 million. A small fraction of that money has actually been spent, and relatively few real Taliban fighters have changed sides.

The $50 million donation from the United States announced Wednesday differs only in that the money is being given to the Afghan government to disburse, instead of being doled out by the American government as was done previously for such funds.

Last year, the United States helped facilitate secret talks between a Taliban military commander and Afghan officials, paying him a large amount of money and flying him to Kabul from Pakistan. It later turned out, however, that the man was an impostor.

Assuming you are true and Indians will never change their mentality - what should Pakistan do about it? Keep creating militant groups that bite the hand that feeds them???
