"Our Army will give a befitting reply to Pakistan if that country violates ceasefire... Kashmir is an integral part of India," Singh said while replying to queries from reporters.

Two Border Security Force (BSF) jawans had lost their lives in the ceasefire violations by Pakistani troops along the Line of Control (LoC) since last week.

Defence Secretary G Mohan Kumar also visited the Badamibagh Headquarters of the Army and was briefed by General-officer-Commanding (GoC) of Army's 15 Corps, Lt Gen Subrata Saha.

After taking stock of situation, Kumar then called on Governor NN Vohra at the Raj Bhavan.

Jammu: A woman was killed and three others, including a Border Security Force (BSF) jawan, were injured in a ceasefire violation by the Pakistani troops along the International Border in Jammu on Wednesday.

The jawan was injured when the Pakistan Rangers started firing at a BSF post in Akhnoor sector of Jammu district this morning.

“The Pakistan Rangers opened 'sniper fire' on a BSF constable guarding a border outpost along the International Border in Kanachak sector of Akhnoor tehsil in Jammu district around 0845 hours," a senior officer said.

As BSF troops tried to evacuate the injured jawan from the Molu post, they were heavily fired upon by the Pakistan Rangers.

BSF personnel then took positions and retaliated to mortar shelling by the Pakistan Rangers.

Exchange of fire was still on when last reports came in.

Injured jawan Anjali Kumar has, meanwhile, been hospitalised. There was no confirmation of a second trooper reportedly getting injured in the exchange of fire.

The Pakistan Rangers also targeted civilian border areas by resorting to small arms firing and shelling of mortar bombs in Bhalwal Bharth, Malabela, Siderwan areas and BoPs at 0910 hours, a police officer said.

Three mortar shells landed deep inside Kanachak sector along the IB, they said.

A 42-year-old woman identified as Poli Devi died in the mortar shelling while 24-year-old Ramesh Kumar and 38-year-old Udha Devi suffered injuries, he said.

The ceasefire violation came two days before Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Jammu to attend the centenary celebrations of former state finance minister Girdhari Lal Dogra.

It has become almost customary for Pakistan troops to violate the bilateral ceasefire along the Line of Control (LoC) and the International Border in Jammu and Kashmir each time a VVIP from the Central government visits the state.

Pak Rangers delegation to come India in September | Zee News
Last Updated: Friday, July 17, 2015 - 19:44

New Delhi: Notwithstanding heightened tension along the border, India and Pakistan have taken the first step towards implementing the decision by their leaders in Russia to re-engage and a delegation of Pakistan Rangers will arrive here in September for talks with BSF.

The two sides have been engaged in a blame game following a series of ceasefire violations by Pakistan which resorted to mortar shelling of Indian areas over two days this week. India retaliated and both sides said they had suffered casualtiies.

The BSF-Pakistan Rangers meeting will take place as a follow up to the decision taken by Prime Ministers Narendra Modi and Nawaz Sharif when they met in Ufa, Russia on July 10. Among other things, it was decided that the National Security Advisers of the two countries to discuss all issues connected to terrorism.

"The dates for the Director General level talks between Pak Rangers and BSF has been fixed for September 9-13," official sources said here.

The last time the dates for this much delayed meeting was fixed was in March this year, they said, but Pakistan later postponed it citing change of guard at the helm of Punjab Rangers.

Pakistan Rangers have two Directors General (DsG)-- Punjab and Sindh.

Now, with a new DG in command at the Rangers Punjab, the delegation, led Maj Gen Bilal Akbar (DG Rangers Sindh) and new DG Maj Gen Umer Farooq Burki (DG Rangers Punjab) - will attend the talks at the Border Security Force (BSF) headquarters here.

The delegation is expected to come here through the Attari-Wagah land border in Punjab.

The visit has been pending for over a year now as BSF had sent the invite for DG-level talks in early 2014.

The last time the two sides met was in December 2013 when a high-level BSF team travelled to Lahore.

Since then, the ties have been strained because of ceasefire violations along the International Border and the Line of Control.

The Indian side, the official said, is expected to take up the issue of ceasefire violations and those pertaining to border guarding logistics during this meeting even as it expects that their counterparts from across the border would be armed with similar issues.

"The two sides will want to talk and thrash out issues in a cordial manner especially after the premiers of the two sides decided to re-energise the ties. The Union Home Ministry and security establishment want to honour these talks as they are happening after a long hiatus and carry much significance," the official said.

The Indian side would be led by BSF Director General D K Pathak with officials drawn from border management division of the Home Ministry, Ministry of External Affairs, PWD officials of the Punjab government, sleuths of the Narcotics Control Bureau and officials from the Survey of India among others.

The Pakistani delegation is expected have a dozen senior officials from its security establishment including those from the Interior Ministry.

Srinagar: Not paying heed to the Indian warning, Pakistan violated ceasefire along the Line of Control (LoC) twice in a span of 24 hours – first, late on Friday night and then again on Saturday afternoon.

As per reports, Pakistan Army troops opened small arms fire from across the LoC in Naushera sector of Jammu and Kashmir's Rajouri district last night.

No casualties were reported in the Naushera ceasefire violation in which several Indian Army posts were targeted.

Pakistani Army started "unprovoked" firing on Indian positions at 9:25 pm last night and the firing lasted till 11:45 pm, a defence spokesman said today.

"Our troops effectively retaliated to the unprovoked firing from across the border," the spokesman said.

Hours later, Pakistani troops again opened unprovoked fire at Indian positions along the LoC in Poonch district.

Defence Ministry spokesman Colonel Manish Mehta said: "The Pakistan Army opened to unprovoked firing on our positions on the Line of Control today afternoon in Poonch district.”

"They are using small arms and automatic weapons. Our troops have retaliated using same calibre weapons. Firing exchanges are still going on in the area," Mehta added.

There has seen a sudden spurt of ceasefire violations from across the border this month.

On July 16, Pakistani troops pounded a number of places along the International Border and Line of Control in Jammu region with heavy firing and mortars, leaving four persons injured and triggering fear among the villagers.

India lodged a protest with Pakistan while the Indian troops retaliated "effectively" to the cross-border firing which came ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's scheduled visit to Jammu on Friday.

A woman was killed and six others, including two BSF jawans, were injured on July 15 in firing and mortar shelling in Jammu district by Pakistan Rangers.

On July 9, Pakistani troops had fired at a forward border post in North Kashmir killing a BSF jawan.

On July 5, a BSF jawan was killed in Pakistani firing along LoC in Nougam sector in Kashmir Valley.

Amid the rising instances of ceasefire violation, the Indian Army has warned Pakistan of a firm response.

Indian troops will respond firmly and effectively to Pakistani provocations as they feel fit and where they deem fit, a top Army commander said earlier this week .

"We have seen over last two weeks or so that the number of incidents have increased," said Northern Army Commander Lt Gen D S Hooda said.

"The response has to be firm," the General Officer Commanding in Chief (GoC-in-C) of Northern Command said.

Asked about instructions to the troops, he said "they will carry out firm response and retaliate effectively as they feel fit where they deemed fit. Nobody has to look over the shoulder to higher headquarter that this is what I need I need to do."
