The Pakistani president said on Saturday that his country is likely to sign a free trade agreement (FTA) with Turkey, according to local media reports.

A statement by the Associated Press of Pakistan reported that President Arif Alvi said during an event in Karachi that an FTA would boost the bilateral trade between the two countries.

Alvi said he discussed the FTA with his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdoğan during his recent visit to Istanbul. He said there were seven meetings held on the issue before, but the FTA was not previously realized because of concerns held by Turkey.

"Now, these hindrances will be removed and the FTA will be finalized soon," Alvi said.

. . .
The worst timing ever for Pakistan.

This would be disastrous for many Pakistani companies. Now that the Lira has devalued, there is no way they could compete with Turkish companies in the same business field.

Don't do this to yourself, Pakistan. Was there even one FTA which was beneficial for Pakistan?

. . .
In our history FTAs have only meant bad news.
Yes they have because we lacked energy in past but now with free economic zones FTA is not bad news after all. We will have an equal chance. Moving on our main exports cannot be matched with Turkey like textile and grain and FTA will get us exports cheap

Why are you angry on the FTA being signed by Nawaz or Imran. Does it matters who signed it? You have other issues please get them solved.

Maybe Pakistan is balancing between Saudi and Turkey.

There's just one good aspect to this FTA:
In theory, you could use Turkey as a gate to export your goods to the European market with almost zero duty.

However, if the EU says no, there will be no agreement between Ankara and Islamabad. Brussels has the power to veto any trade agreement Turkey is ready to sign.

Maybe Pakistan is balancing between Saudi and Turkey.

Our import from Saudis is of just oil where as from Turkey our imports are other commodities. I think FTA with Turkey is to keep China competitive.

Main thing to notice is Pakistan had a certain burst of foreign diplomacy. President in Turkey, PM in China and Saudis and Iranian FM in Pakistan the region is moving at a very fast pace.

I want turkey to invest in Pakistani Defense (SAM/air defense, 5th generation fighter, etc), renewable energy, technology, education and automobile.

They will and you'll watch them.
Besides there are not many common industruies between both. Pakistan manufactures what Turkey needs and Turkey manufactures what Pakistan needs.
It's not like Bangladesh or China where most of what gets manufactured is what you are manufacturing yourself.

I still prefer Turkish Free Range organic eggs here, as they are cheaper ;)

I want Pakistan to invest on itself and learn from Turkey.
Change your mindset mate, your country makes more than it needs, just get rid of the corruption among the elite and the society in general, and you will be investing in other countries in half a decades time...
