Trade deficit — the worst is almost over

Global Container Freight Rate Index soared from $3,143 in Dec 2020 to $10,839 in Sept 2021 before falling.

There are positive signs all over from the macroeconomics point of view. Export figures are expected to rise significantly with the new investment in machinery and capital about to kick in.

Like I said in another thread, I fully expect over the next 2 years that a lot of the projects underway will be completed, a lot of the factories being setup will be operating, employment will increase and with it the general health of the economy. Inflation remains to be tackled, but we'll have to see how that goes. If govt can control inflation, the economic picture is rosier than it's being made out to be.

Our media is focusing on issues in very narrow windows, like the few week tomato crisis a few months ago - where is the tomato crisis now? They create mountains out of micro-issues to sell sensationalist headlines.

Unfortunately people commenting on this forum and creating gloom and doom threads basically have a zero understanding and knowledge of how the economy works.

One of the most important thing people fail to understand is that the greater exports create real job oppertunities .

Previous governments focused too much on government hiring programs to offer political jobs and basically destroy government owenwd institutes.

Real growth comes from the private sector hiring and investments. We are seeing tremendous activity in that sector.

unfortunatley any politician would get cold feet watching the trade numbers go down initially and would never make long term decisions to bring economy to real growth path.

It was more important to hire inbred patwaris in PIA and Jiyalas in the PMS than to fix the economy.
For the first time we are seeing prudent long term economic policies.

I hope the couple these new factories with implementation of technologies (at affordable prices) to raise agricultural productivity to at least global averages, if not better. True we may not be going through a crisis now, but the ground work needs to be laid so that the agricultural sector is more resilient to any shocks and the country doesn’t have to worry about affordable food.

I hope the couple these new factories with implementation of technologies (at affordable prices) to raise agricultural productivity to at least global averages, if not better. True we may not be going through a crisis now, but the ground work needs to be laid so that the agricultural sector is more resilient to any shocks and the country doesn’t have to worry about affordable food.

We are already seeing record growth in our agricultural output and it’s not all because of better rains.
it takes sound policies and support for the farmers that result in better output.

I remember the days when a lot of Bengali folks were complaining about Hasina. This was circa-2010-2015-ish. Then after 2015, I started to hear (from people living inside Bangladesh), "It's hard to find anyone to do cleaning work. People have all sorts of opportunities at factories and companies. No one goes hungry." Yes, the Awami League struck down a lot of opposition, but at the end of the day, no amount of authoritarianism will quiet a rumbling stomach. Despite the pain and turmoil at the start of Hasina's government, the Bangladeshi people are now benefitting from the economy. This was also the case in Turkey in the Erdogan era. @Bilal9

It wouldn't surprise me if Pakistan goes down the same path. You'll hear a lot of animosity at the start of the PTI governments, but as true businesses (not importers) see growth and as naukar-walay houseboys find better jobs, the opposition will lose supporters. Today's poor guy might take biryani for votes, but his better-educated sons or daughters with jobs will not. If PTI gets through these initial years, they'll reach a growth phase where they'll build stronger roots in the population.

The real interesting thing will be to see if they clean house like Hasina or Erdogan did...

If the trend and growth rate continues we can expect to leave Bangladesh behind in exports with in 3-5 years. One advantage we have over Bangladesh is that their exports are almost 97 percent garments.
We have a growing IT field which is expected to cross $10 B in the next five years.
We have so much potential , resources and skill sets available which if properly utilized can propel us in the direction of fast and sustained growth.

I can name a few where BD doesn’t even exist as a market:

tourism , defence , minerals , oil refining , and the list goes on and on. We should have been able to exploit our natural advantages but I guess building Raiwind wall was more important than making a road to scenic Swat areas.

I concur. Hasina's authoritarianism is a tough pill to swallow, but at the end of the day, people need jobs.

We know there is chori (in fact massive chori) happening, especially in terms of infra being built (roads, bridges, export zones, tech parks), but if economy gets stronger because of it, ultimately the chori will be worthwhile.

I never thought I'd have this come out of my own mouth, but what would be the alternative in a 3rd world country?

Chori will happen regardless, let it happen with some long term benefit for the people.

In South Asia, you can lessen the amount of chori with Public scrutiny but it is well nigh impossible to stop it completely.
