Pakistan to Import Tomato From Iran

Big vegetable vendors aka mafias here in Pakistan also do this to create artificial shortage.
Partly wrong but partly right, you can't store tomatoes for longer period like Onion and create artificial shortage.

The sad thing is, the advantage of the price hike goes to the middle man. Not the farmer.

News like this angers me. I have no problem about trading with Iran, in fact I welcome it, but tomatoes? I can grow tomatoes in a dirt patch in the UK. Why are we importing them?

.
Too much rain this year during harvesting time.

Yes another reason. Big vegetable vendors aka mafias here in Pakistan also do this to create artificial shortage.
It's more like an artificial shortage. I don't think pakistan need import tomato.
I have found an tomato sauce analysis report , chinese version, it list top50 exporter and importer countries for tomato sauce in 2013. Pakistan export 715751 $, 274678kg, india export 570518$, 283037kg.
india import data 8047011$, 8299796 kg, didn't found Pakistan in Top50 import list.

. .
Hmm..
On different note, Tomatoes is not native crop in Indian sub continent. It came around 1920 by Portuguese traders, see today, it became indefensible part of cousins.

. .
Does iran even produce tomatoes or are they selling Indian tomatoes re-exported?

Tomatoes are one of the worlds easiest plants to grow. just plant it and water it (or wait for rain). it grows like a weed, is unaffected by other plants, it just grows. Even in the frost and cold of the British winter, it dies down and re-appears the next year perfectly fine.

I seriously do not know and do not care.
If there is corruption they can ask for our help.

But seriously I never took Iran to be a Tomato country.

But sure why not....

But how the hell are we not producing enough for our own countrymen? like WTF

What can i say?

we have elections coming up. every single mothafucka is going to shout 'Agriculture is the backbone of our economy' and 'Farmers should be liberated from the feudal mafias'

but

here we are.

Importing something you can easily produce on very little budget.

what a bunch of idiots these politicians and businessmen who put Tomato over Country.

Because Pakistan produces enough to feed her population, even though Indian produces much more, due to our damn exploding population it won't be enough to feed everyone I guess. :(

50 or 60 or something.

even if it is half of that.

it is still expensive.

Pakistan is suppose to be an Agriculture country.

LOL, it reached around RS. 170 here in India couple of months back I guess. Not surprised. 8-)

Iran exported about $35 million worth of tomatoes during the five months to Aug. 22.

Pakistan to Import Tomato From Iran

The Pakistani government has decided not to relax the conditions to import tomato from India even after the shortage in Punjab and other parts aggravated.

However, efforts have been made to import it from Iran and Afghanistan instead of India.

Anticipating some relaxation from Islamabad, Indian vegetable exporters have been bringing an ample supply of tomato to Amritsar to export it to Pakistan once the quarantine laws are relaxed.

Rajdeep Upal, an exporter from India, said almost 300 to 350 trucks of tomatoes were arriving in Amritsar, which is much higher than the demand, Pakistani newspaper The News International reported on its website on Tuesday.

Secretary of Market Committee in Lahore Shahzad Cheema said daily demand of Lahore division is almost 50 trucks while supply is not increasing to 20 trucks.

“We are trying to bring tomatoes from other channels from Afghanistan and Iran.”

About 136,500 tons of tomatoes worth 1.14 trillion rials ($35 million) were exported from Iran during the five months to August 22, the Islamic Republic of Iran Customs Administration’s latest data show.

With close to $25 million worth of purchases, Iraq was the biggest export destination followed by Afghanistan, Pakistan, Azerbaijan, Argentina, the UAE, Turkmenistan, Oman, Russia, Kazakhstan, Qatar, Kuwait and Georgia, Mizan Online reported.

Shameful. A country with so much of agriculture is dependent on basic vegetable on others.

As if Indian's can afford it at this price. And I don't care either if Tomato price is skyrocketing in Pakistan. I was just comparing the situation and it seems like you guy's are in a better shape. Just 50+ great :enjoy:

man we are always in a better shape than you lot. its not even a question

but our elitist policies are actually make sure that we become equal

There is a growing concern that Pakistan's agriculture policy has been eroded systematically.
