ISLAMABAD (Reuters) - Pakistan on Monday approved the import of 300,000 tonnes of wheat to relieve a shortage of flour supplies that has created a crisis for the government of Prime Minister Imran Khan.

Prices of flour and bread shot up last week as the ingredient disappeared from shops and wholesale markets, while bread makers shut in protest at what they called government pressure to sell the staple at controlled prices.

"It is not possible for me to sell bread for eight rupees a piece if I buy flour bags at high prices," said Sheraz Khan, a shopkeeper in the garrison city of Rawalpindi, next to Islamabad, the capital.

"Gas prices have also shot up multiple times since this new government came into power," he added estimating that the bill for his gas-powered oven had increased four times.

Pakistan's energy pricing regulator has proposed yet another hike, which officials say is likely to be approved.

Monday's import decision was made by the Economic Coordination Council, with the first shipment expected to arrive by Feb. 15, the finance ministry said in a statement, adding that it would wave regulatory duties on the grain, which could be shipped in until March 31.

It was not yet clear from which country or countries Pakistan will import the wheat.

Pakistan exported more than 600,000 metric tonnes of wheat from late 2018 to June 2019, its statistics bureau says. Although the government banned exports in July last year, 48,000 metric tonnes was still sent overseas until October 2019.

Economic experts say it made no sense to export the wheat after poor crop yields in the last harvest, and called for an inquiry into the exports despite the ban.

"Someone made billions," said opposition party leader Khawaja Asif said, adding that he suspected the wheat crises might be the result of a scam.

Rising wheat prices have drawn sharp criticism of Khan's government, already under tremendous pressure after a key party in his coalition government quit his cabinet, and other allies also raised questions over the government's performance.

Pakistan is a mostly agricultural country that normally grows enough to meet the needs of its population.

Opposition parties and some economists have called for an inquiry into why Pakistan needs to import wheat when it was exporting the grain until late last year.

In between export and import 'topi drama', there was shortage /price hike in NWFP, which was neutralized by supplying wheat from Punjab storage, puppy Buzdar complied to his master.
Now the trickle down effect of supply wheat to NWFP is being felt by Punjab, while in NWFP daku PTI is busy in smuggling of fine wheat as well.
All the crime is happening in front of the public, PTI daku are getting rich day by day.
It's about time mismanagement as well be declared crime, if the loss to national exchequer is above $1000, incl. the cost of man hours.

A nation full of agricultural land is importing wheat, seriously what is wrong with our government. This is what the old governments used to do. What is going on?

Profit is going on. Government is making profit or more like government ministers are making a profit.

The game is pretty easy to understand.

I said it previously and posters here called me names but I'm gonna say it again. Pakistan should not export any food items at all especially when we have extreme poverty, low purchasing power, growing population and lowest consumption of food and calorie intake.

I understand that but the new inqalaabi government needs to take strict action. Not in statements but actually arrest those involved and overtaking those mills who are involved.

The PIA was starting to improve their services but unfortunately the supreme court got rid of the chairman and we all know the next person will be a political personality who will be making money. It seems the Pakistani system is backward/outdated.

Comedy of errors. First export 600K tons then import 300K tons at twice the rate that we got from the export of wheat!

Please tell me, should I laugh at their stupidy or cry at the Loss to the national exchequer?
That 600k is still stored somewhere in Pakistan,300k out of it has been imported on goods declaration while rest awaits. That has happened many times in past nothing is extra-ordinary in it this time.

Govt is desperate to increase exports that is why they did it earlier without keeping a tap on mafias who profited from the situation now. In November, there were tomatoes shortage and now wheat. Clearly PTI Govt inexperience is on fully play. Opposition and PTI critics are fully enjoying the situation on TV. This is hurting PTI govt not just at provincial level but at federal level too.

Honorable Sir,

Do I understand that because the previous gov’ts had made similar mistakes; it is alight for PTI to make the same error as well? One would normally expect to learn from past mistakes because such actions incur substantial Foreign Exchange loss to the national exchequer which is already short of FE.

Maybe I am too stupid to follow the reasoning behind your justification. I beg your forgiveness but regret my inability to understand the logic of your argument and the reason as to why you felt the need to defend an 'Undefendable' error of judgment.
