Washington: Pakistan has the fastest growing nuclear weapons programme in the world and by 2020 it could have enough fissile material to produce more than 200 nuclear devices, a top American think tank has said.

"Though many states are downsising their stockpiles, Asia is witnessing a buildup. Pakistan has the fastest-growing nuclear programme in the world. By 2020, it could have a stockpile of fissile material that, if weaponized, could produce as many as 200 nuclear devices," Council on Foreign Relations has said.

The report 'Strategic Stability in the Second Nuclear Age', authored by George Mason University's Gregory Koblentz, has identified South Asia as the region "most at risk of a breakdown in strategic stability due to an explosive mixture of unresolved territorial disputes, cross-border terrorism, and growing nuclear arsenals."

Pakistan, the report said, has deployed or is developing 11 delivery systems for its nuclear warheads, including aircraft, ballistic missiles and cruise missiles.

"Pakistan has not formally declared the conditions under which it would use nuclear weapons but has indicated that it seeks primarily to deter India from threatening its territorial integrity or the ability of its military to defend its territory," the report said.

CFR said while Pakistan is focused predominantly on the threat posed by India, it is reportedly also concerned by the potential for the US to launch a military operation to seize or disarm Pakistani nuclear weapons.

"This concern is based in part on reported contingency planning by the US military to prevent Pakistani nuclear weapons from falling into the hands of terrorists," CFR said.

CFR said India is estimated to possess enough fissile material for between 90 and 110 nuclear weapons and is expanding its fissile material production capacity.

China, it said, is estimated to have 250 nuclear weapons for delivery by a mix of medium, intermediate, and intercontinental-range ballistic missiles and bombers.

"Though nuclear arsenals are shrinking in the rest of the world, Asia is witnessing a nuclear buildup. Unlike the remaining P5 countries, China is increasing and diversifying its nuclear arsenal," the report said.

. .
what else can pak do? it cannot compete with india on conventional arms, so it has to fall back on nukes.

.
We already have enough nukes,we rather need investment in the delivery system

For the time being we need

*ALCM though with high speed
*Submarine launched variant of cruise missile

we don't need Shaheen III or any other long range missile

Pakistan has to do everything possible to counter India so i don’t think so Pakistan is doing the wrong thing.

Agreed we need solid delivery systems. 200 bombs are enough.

I have been hearing this for the past 5 years.

this is nothing to counter india. it is more to do with insecurity of pak. 10 nukes is more then enough to deter india.

As usual, unwanted Americans poking their noses in others matters.

As for nuclear weapons, they are never a solution. Both India and Pakistan should refrain from building huge nuclear arsenals. That's my opinion. Invest in your people and stop warmongering.

Downsizing? For example from 2,105 nukes to 2,000 in the case of the US? Americans and their double-standards continue to stoke my amusement.

Mr Genius before feeling proud and chest thumping by saying "Cannot compete in Conventional arms" plz consider that Pakistan is 7 times smaller nation than India...!

...and let also not forget that Pakistan started with nothing.

The division of the British Indian Army occurred on June 30, 1947 in which Pakistan received six armored, eight artillery and eight infantry regiments compared to the forty armored, forty artillery and twenty one infantry regiments that went to India. At the Division Council, which was chaired by Rear Admiral Lord Mountbatten of Burma, the Viceroy of India, and was composed of the leaders of the Muslim League and the Indian National Congress, they had agreed that the British Indian Army of 11,800 officers and 500,000 enlisted personnel was to be divided to the ratio of 64% for India and 36% for Pakistan.

Pakistan was forced to accept a smaller share of the armed forces as most of the military assets, such as weapons depots, military bases, etc., were located inside the new Union of India, while those that were in the new Dominion of Pakistan were mostly obsolete.

Pakistan also had a dangerously low ammunition reserve of only one week.
We have come a long way since. Faltered, yes...but dragged ourselves football fields from where we started.

Chin up chaps. Got a long way to go.
