Pakistan to face water crisis after ongoing gas, power shortages: Khawaja Asif!

All credit goes to PMLN tajarbakaar team.
Dekho dekho kon aaya shor machance pagal banane aaya.

Pakistanis just refuse to face the challenges ahead. It ignores MASSIVE population growth, lower rainfall in the indus catchment areas, recycling of waste water, wastage of water, reforestation to retain ground water and fertile soil, stop uncontrolled pumping of underground water sources as the water table in Pakistan is declining steeply, groundwater pollution etc etc etc

Instead Pakistan keeps pointing fingers at each other or India, they have a death wish, where the real problems are NEVER discussed but find solace in blaming India, US, politicians, the devil, God or whoever is around to kick. This is far far easier than using the rational mind.

LAHORE: Minister for Water and Power Khawaja Asif on Tuesday said Pakistan will face water crisis soon after the current power and gas shortage in the country, Express Newsreported.

Addressing a ceremony of Water and Power Development Authority in Lahore, the minister stressed that the authorities have failed to pay heed to this alarming issue.

“As citizens of Pakistan, we are in a habit of wasting energy,” Asif said.

The minister said the government is taking all possible measures to end the current electricity crisis, adding it will be tackled in the next two to three years.

Speaking about Diamer Bhasha Dam, Asif said the land for the project is being bought at the same price as a property in Islamabad.

“These dams generating electricity can benefit the future generations immensely,” the minister added.

why shortage when we had flood of no words can describe in kashmir ?
why govt is so short sighnted ?
is it due to neglegance or desgin that there wil be shortge of water?
waht are GOP schme for rain water harvesting ... ground water managet ... desilting dams ....?

. .
Thanks for reminding about the desilting of dams which has severely reduced Pakistans capacity to retain water.

Electricity crisis will be solved in next 2-3 years hahahahaha they know they will not be in gov in coming years. They are running out of time. The only thing they did it to impress modi sarkar ..... other than that total they are more useless than PPP.

So one thing is fact now Experience doesn't make you better its intelligence

Agriculture uses far more water than industry. If Pakistan becomes industrialized enough water problem will be solved.

How do you purpose to feed the nation?

> Line losses caused by inefficient transmission and distribution systems.
> High level of theft.
> Low recovery of revenues by distribution companies (DISCOs) from public as well as private users.
> Inadequate and delayed payment of subsidy by the government.

The above lists the causes of power outages. Fix them and power shortage will vanish tomorrow.

The water problem was not created by PMLN but all the successive governments since the construction of Mangla and Terbela. WAPDA has a major role to play for creating this crisis and not to mention the population. Pakistan's population was about 70 million in 1975 and water storage capacity was more than 15 maf. Fast forward that to 2015 and population has grown to 195 million and water storage capacity has declined to less then 15 maf. The only water storage added to system are the raising of mangla dam and couple of other small dams (which is not even enough to compensate for the lost storage from silting).

How to fix this problem. Simple build water reservoirs (small or large). Modernize agriculture (this will also include the delivery of water to agriculture i.e. updating canal system and barrages etc).

I think people need to stop blaming each other and start working. Only collectively people will be able to bring about change.

Mr. Mirza Hamid Hasan, former Secretary of Pakistan's Ministry of Water and Power presented a paper titled ―An Overview of Pakistan‘s Energy Sector: Policy Perspective which said that access to reliable, affordable and uninterrupted supply of energy was the key to economic growth and welfare of any society.

Discussing the current energy situation he pointed out a number of factors which were responsible for the severe shortage --

> Line losses caused by inefficient transmission and distribution systems.
> High level of theft.
> Low recovery of revenues by distribution companies (DISCOs) from public as well as private users.
> Inadequate and delayed payment of subsidy by the government.

This was making it difficult for the power generation companies (GENCOs) and IPPs to utilize their existing generation capacity. This has also given rise to a huge circular debt which was currently around Rs.400 billion.

Pakistan has a hydro potential for 60,000 MW which could be tapped to meet current and future energy requirements but there were various technical, financial, infrastructural and management challenges that were impeding its optimum utilization. The project sites were far flung, isolated lacking basic infrastructural facilities and connectivity to transmission networks and involved high capital cost and long gestation periods but, once in place, could be the cheapest sustainable energy source.

The bottom line is that Pakistan needs to Improve governance through power policies based on merit rather than vested interests, check power theft, ensure full revenue recovery, and curb corruption.

itna parha likha to hamara minister nahi hay.

How do you purpose to feed the nation?
The way other industrial countries do it. Use a bit of the far greater money industry generates to buy agricultural products from other countries.

The water crisis will still be there. Pakistan has about 150 maf of surface water (maybe much less now due to various reasons, less rain, snow fall etc) and about 50 maf ground water. Pakistan is a water scarce country (less then 1000m3 per capita water available). So changing it into an industrialized country won't fix that. Population control, building reservoirs, modernizing agriculture and introducing water saving techniques is the answer.
