Pakistan’s Directorate General of Munitions Production (DGMP) green-lit the development of a supersonic missile for the Pakistan Navy (PN), according to the Pakistan Ministry of Defence Production’s (MoDP) disclosure for 2017-2018.

Neither MoDP or DGMP revealed the range, weight, dimensions, or other specifications of the missile. In fact, they did not specify if the supersonic missile would be an anti-ship cruising missile (ASCM) or land-attack cruise missile (LACM), but a dual-ASCM/LACM is likely.

In addition, the DGMP also approved the development of an “improved version” of the Harbah dual-ASCM/LACM. Pakistan revealed the Harbah through a missile test in January 2018 from onboard the PNS Himmat, an Azmat-class fast attack craft (FAC).

This ‘improved’ variant of the Harbah might be the dual-ASCM/LACM the PN test-fired in April 2019, again from the PNS Himmat FAC.

Notes & Comments:

With defensibility against a supersonic-cruising ASCM – such as the BrahMos — difficult or infeasible, the next option for Pakistan is to equip itself with analogous capability (note: this was discussed in detail in a Quwa Premium article, which is now freely accessible – Countering the BrahMos Threat).

Having signed-off on the development of a supersonic missile, it seems that the PN is working on securing its own supersonic missile for anti-ship missions. For a truly analogous solution, the missile would need to be a supersonic-cruising design, i.e., with an air-breathing engine (ramjet or scramjet).

No timeline was provided for the PN’s supersonic missile, nor is there any indication of collaboration or a joint project. However, that would not be surprising (as even India and Russia cooperated on the BrahMos) as it could help with shortening timelines and reducing cost.

Potential partners can include China, Ukraine and/or South Africa. China is currently marketing a number of supersonic-cruising ASCMs, such as the HD-1A, CM-302, and CX-1. South Africa had developed ramjet technology through the 1990s, such as the SAHV. Finally, Ukraine’s Yuzhnoye State Design Office is also developing ramjet technology, though for space applications. Be it through an existing design or simply a pool of expertise on the technology, Pakistan could leverage outside help.

i think when nkorea like much poor nation is developing slbms why Pakistan cannot develop such missiles

Pakistan needs to desperately develop it's navy with the single goal of preventing India from blocking shipping lanes.

That is no longer a problem and IN cannot blockade Pakistani shipping lines. Given the combination of weapons PN has inducted and inducting the blockade is a wet dream.

This missile, in my opinion, will be for offensive use.

PA/PAF/PN should also work on a counter to such missiles, subsonic, super and in the future, hypersonic.

USA has identified lasers as a possible counter to each type of missile. Eventually, a long range super and even hypersonic missiles would be one of the best ways of defeating LACM & ASCM's.

Another way is to utilise long range rail guns.

We need to focus more on space technology, the new place of the new arms race.

Supersonics a lot more lethal than subsonics due to their kinetic energy alone they can give a better punch

This missile needs to be stealth to explore full potential

Speaking off the topic, Why cant Pakistan develop a passive detection system like Czech VERA and Ukrainian Kochulga I mean we have some sort of knowledge in building radars for JFT and if we can exploit it we can develop it perfectly

Pakistan tried to purchase a vera system, but the sale was prevented by uncle sam.

Western world focus is intelligent subsonic cruise missiles which can detect and evade interceptor while eastern / Russian approach is high speed Which mean they can be detected easily at long range and intercepted as well by multiple interceptor at long range ,time will tell which philosophy is correct

Hypersonic is different

PN sure might have inducted alot, but the behemoth IN is also inducting with the sole goal of striking Karachi and blocking sea lanes , they gave strong anti ship A2AD ( Brahmos) , good layered AD , Fighter-bomber carrier borne wing , good ASW aerial and naval arm , a lot of submarines,
Underestimating your enemy is a very dumb thing to do ,
The enemy need not physically block our shipping lanes , it will merely say and ships themselves will avoid those that don't will be fired upon from 500km away , and if we get too close then the airborne arm will harass our AD lacking fleets , the only way to sink some enemies would be by lucky or skill full submarine positioning but the enemy would be utilizing its own subs too ,

What we need are very long range supersonic missiles , submarine launched super sonic missile ; air launched super sonic missiles ( we have cm400 but a sea skimming variant rather than a ballistic trajectory one would be prefered) then we need a large fighter craft too carry long range naval interdiction and strike missions , need better and more powerful AWACS,
A good approach would be a strong land based super sonic anti ship ballistic missile arm akin to China's,

The fact that it took entire IN more than two weeks to find a PN sub speaks volume of the IN's capability.

Current PN weapons are enough to deny blockade. Keep in mind our location and possible sea route for shipping traffic.

Pakistan already has Vera though few in numbers.
