I wish we could know for real if there is any back channel engagement between India and Pakistan. Neither country can afford to fight a perpetual war.

If Washington was indeed mediating for peace in South Asia (as you speculate), then it is counterintuitive for US to stir diplomatic trouble with Pakistan. Something like this will not help cajole the leadership of Pakistan
