ISLAMABAD: The inventory of Pakistan Navy is being strengthened to give it “a real punch” while measures are being taken to make the navy a potent force, defence experts have said.

Last year, the Pakistan Navy inked a deal with China for four state-of-the-art frigates besides inducting modern Agosta 90b submarines and enhancing the existing fleet of P-3C Orion surveillance aircrafts. The acquisition of four F-22P frigates would be an important step for the county’s maritime defence and experts hope that the first of the ships would be delivered in 2008.

“These warships would not only enhance the operational proficiency of the navy but also make the maritime defence of Pakistan impregnable,” the experts said. According to schedule, China State Shipbuilding Corporation would supply the ships from 2008 to 2013. The fourth warship would be built completely in Pakistan to transfer the technology.

In his recent visit to China, President General Pervez Musharraf visited the Hudong shipyard where the frigates will be made.

The F-22Ps have evolved from the existing design of latest Chinese frigates with modifications and customisations to suit Pakistan Navy’s requirements. The warship will be capable of operating independently or as part of a task force in a multi-threat scenario. It will also be capable of operating in areas contaminated with Nuclear, Biological and Chemical agents. The frigates will be equipped with organic helicopters, specially designed for anti-submarine warfare, surface-to-surface and surface-to-air missiles along with many other associated self defence systems. Its design will also include stealth features to minimise detection and enhance combat capability. The combat system of the ship features various sensors for surveillance and detection of surface, sub-surface, and air contacts and corresponding engagement weapon systems.

All the sensors and weapons will be integrated through a Command and Control network, which will be supported by the navigation, communication and ship-to-ship and ship-to-shore Data Link networks.

In 1999, Pakistan Navy inducted the sophisticated modern submarine Agosta 90-B. The submarine ‘Khalid’ was made by French technicians with the assistance of Pakistani workmen in France.

Currently, the Pakistan Navy is planning the induction of a third Agosta 90-B called ‘Hamza’ later this year. The latest version of this French technology submarine has been built entirely in Pakistan, by local experts. The submarine was built by generating indigenous resources. The second in the series, Saad, was inducted by the navy in 2004 and was also built in Pakistan with the help of French engineers.

These Submarines are capable of launching anti-ship missiles and various types of torpedoes. The Agosta 90B has been designed to operate as anti-submarine, anti-surface, intelligence gathering vessel and for sea-patrol. It is equipped with four bow torpedo tubes and is capable of diving deeper than 300 metres with a maximum sprint speed of 20 knots.

The Pakistan Navy’s Agosta 90B Khalid Class submarines will be equipped with MESMA – an air-independent propulsion system. This system will increase the endurance of the submerged submarine.

The navy has also acquired eight P-3C Orion surveillance aircrafts from the US. These aircrafts would be fitted with modern avionics and mission systems by Lockheed Martin, the manufacturer of P-3C Orion. The aircrafts are being provided by the US Navy free of cost and the expenses for the modifications in the aircraft avionics systems will also be met mostly by the US military aid.

The P-3C Orion is a long range maritime patrol aircraft with an endurance of about 18 hours and can carry Harpoon missiles. With the induction of eight P-3Cs, the existing fleet of Pakistan Navy’s P-3Cs will grow up to 10.

y dont u guys swith off HQ-7 to VLS just like thailand did.....

Dunno, but the Hq-7 system is a pretty advanced SAM and is cpable of destroying the Brahmos. 1 f-22p will have 18 of these

.
i meant to import some american SM missiles and use it as VLS which would be much better than HQ-7.......

Monday, Its design will also include stealth features to minimise detection and enhance combat capability.

I dont understand why because of a special paint job they start calling everything stealth. One of the worst offenders in this regard is the Eurofighter as well. Stealth should mean the ability to avoid radar detection, not the fact that instead of 40km it is detected at 39.5km which is what these paint job and few design changes give.

.
true.... if u want stealth either go for type 22 or type 054........

organic helicopters are specially designed for anti-submarine warfare, surface to surface and surface to air missiles along with numerous associated self-defence systems.

thats all i could find about them on internet.

anyone else wants to contribute?

Organic helicopters refer more to the functionality the choppers provide for a particular mission or purpose within a battle group. More like an organ ( arm, leg etc.)

here is a typical example:

In advanced stage discussions are held between the Hellenic Navy and the navy of Pakistan for the concession of two frigates of type "S", against sum of roughly 80 millions of Euros.

The Hellenic Navy currently has 10 frigates of the particular class. These frigates, as the General Staff of Navy (YEN) noted, will not undergo the program of modernisation of medium life (mid-life upgrade).

The discussions began six months ago when the Pakistani Navy, at indication of Dutch constructors, addressed the Greek Ministry of National Defence expressing interest for the acquisition of two frigates "S".

The source is in greek or whatever, you can simply translate it if you dont believe me.

These frigates are worth less in front of the upcoming F-22Ps Block-II that would be more advanced than the current model with VLS based launchers for AAM and AShMs along with RAAMs and better CIWS and Torpedos. I am sure PN will procure 7 of the new F-22P Block-IIs.

It would be far better for the PN to have constructed the third shipyard at KE&SWs(1999-2001) and modernized the whole facility along with a R&D center for Marine studies and started a JV with Chinese firm on:
3000-3300 Ton Frigate
1500-1700 Ton Corvette
700 Ton FAC
11000 Ton Multi Purpose Tanker

And they could induct some decent numbers of these equipment in coming 15017 years like:
21 3000-3300 Ton Frigate
21 1500-1700 Ton Corvette
21 700 Ton FAC
7-9 11000 Ton Multi Purpose Tanker

There was a midlife modernization programme for six of the ten Greek ships at HSY, completed in July 2010. The Kountouriotis (F-462), the Adrias (F-459), the Navarinon (F-461), the Limnos (F-451), the Elli (F-450), and the Aegaeon (F-460) have all been modernized. The main modernization works were the following:

Replacement of the combat management system and installation of new sensors
Overhaul and improvement of radars
Replacement of navigation systems and upgrade of communications systems
Replacement of propulsion control system and of defined platform systems.

One ship, the Bouboulina (F-463) is inactive, to be decommissioned due to financial cuts. It will be used as a source for spare parts.
