In advanced stage discussions are held between the Hellenic Navy and the navy of Pakistan for the concession of two frigates of type "S", against sum of roughly 80 millions of Euros.

The Hellenic Navy currently has 10 frigates of the particular class. These frigates, as the General Staff of Navy (YEN) noted, will not undergo the program of modernisation of medium life (mid-life upgrade).

The discussions began six months ago when the Pakistani Navy, at indication of Dutch constructors, addressed the Greek Ministry of National Defence expressing interest for the acquisition of two frigates "S".

The source is in greek or whatever, you can simply translate it if you dont believe me.

.
What is the use of buying frigates that are not state-of-the-art anymore and wont be given medium life upgrade? Waste of resources if you ask me.

.
Exactly Sid, i think they said they wont be modernised bcoz they where planning to sell it of,its better to get it after a midlife upgrade get a quote for the same after the MLU and then see if its worh it.

If u look at those ships u can see its so baren ,except for gunner and 8 missile pads there is no other offensive kits abroad.

ATHENS, May 15: Greece will provide four frigates to the Pakistan Navy, two of which will be delivered this year, Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz said here on Monday. The two countries were looking forward to stronger ties in defence and security-related matters and had agreed on the deal, Mr Aziz told the media team accompanying him on his four-nation visit.

Heading a delegation to Athens, including members of his cabinet, senior officials and businessmen, Mr Aziz is scheduled to meet ministers, ship-owners and commerce board members during his two day stay here.

Without giving details of the deal, Mr Aziz said Pakistan was acquiring used frigates. He said two frigates would be delivered this year and the other two in 2007.

The Hellenic Navy uses Elli class frigates and the same will be provided to Pakistan.

Pakistan has been acquiring defence equipment from various countries to meet its defence needs.

MEETING: Pakistan and Greece on Monday agreed on enhanced cooperation in combating terrorism and increasing trade and investment.

The two countries will revive their Joint Economic Commission for forging stronger economic ties.

The decisions came during a meeting here at the Prime Minister’s House between Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz and his Greek counterpart Kostas Karamanlis. The talks covered a wide range of issues, including measures to enhance cooperation in the fight against terrorism.

Prime Minister Aziz said the two countries enjoyed a multi-faceted relationship and agreed on reviving the Joint Economic Commission to boost business ties between their private sectors for increasing bilateral trade and encouraging closer people-to-people contacts.

He said Pakistan had very close links with the European Union and wanted to further enhance the ties. He said his visit to Greece was also in this connection as it was an important member of the bloc.

The prime minister said that during the meeting the two sides discussed the situation in the region and Pakistan’s relations with Afghanistan, Iran and India.

He said Pakistan desired a peaceful solution of the Kashmir dispute with India through dialogue.—Agencies

India is buying 3 advanced Krivak-class frigates from Russia

India and Pakistan are engaged in a mini naval race. Last week India announced that it would purchase three advanced Krivak-class frigates from Russia for $1.6 billion. Pakistan has announced that it will buy four F-22P frigates from China, with the last unit to be constructed in Pakistan.

Pakistan's Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Muhammad Afzal Tahir said in Beijing that the deal would also allow for technology transfer for boosting Pakistan's indigenous production of modern warships.

The News International reported on May 23 that the frigates' keels would be laid at Shanghai's Hudong-Zhonghua Shipyard later this year, with the first frigate scheduled for delivery in 2008.

The fourth frigate will be constructed in Pakistan at the Karachi Shipyard. Under the terms of the contract, the Karachi Shipyard will be upgraded and China will provide training and technical assistance to shipyard personnel.

The F-22P frigate will be equipped with helicopters specially designed to carry surface-to-surface and surface-to-air missiles along with advanced self-defense systems.

Tahir said, "Modalities of its design and configuration are in the final stages." He said signing contracts worth about $600 million was another milestone in ever-increasing bilateral relations between the two countries in the maritime sector.

The first F-22p frigate will be delivered to Pakistan Navy in 2008 and the other three by 2013, Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Muhammad Afzal Thair said here on Monday after completion of his visit to China and Indonesia, a Navy statement said.

The Naval Chief expressed complete satisfaction over Pakistan's frigates deal with China, the statement said.

Transfer of technology is key element of the contract, which was signed on 4 April 2005.

Tot would give quantum boost to the local expertise.

The keel for constitution of the first F-22P frigate will be laid at the Hudong-Zhonghua Shipyard in Shanghai this year.

The naval Chief said that the fourth frigate will be constructed in akistan, according to the statement.

The contract includes upgrading of Karachi Shipyard and Engineering Works, training and technical assistance by the Chinese side during construction of fourth F-22P frigate, it said.

Modalities of its design and configuration are at the final stages, he added.

During the visit to Indonesia the matters of bilateral issues and future collaboration in the filed of Naval Operations and training came under discussion with Defence Minister and Indonesian Naval Chief.

The Admiral said during his stay in China he had very fruitful meetings with Chinese Defence Minister for Commission of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defence Jin Zhuang Long and other high-ranking naval officials

well one thing that your PN can do is get the frigates and then get some other vendors to upgrade it.Probably get chineese help ,im sure they wud be ready to help.

The only thing to take into consideration is that you get the frigates at cheap prices so that the upgadation wud make it feasible.

I dont think F16 was a piece of junk when the PAF recieved it,its the sanctions and lack of further upgrades that made it obsolute.

i still dont get it..... by 2013 those frigates would all be obsolete.......
i think would be better to acquire 054 FFG or 2208 FAC(if in shortage of money) which would be much more effective against indian navy than buying f-22P.....

I have confirmed that the F-22p's that pakistan has orderd are upgraded and have weapons to meet the PN's requirments.

The Pakistani F-22p's will likely have

More stealthy
More SAMS
Better ASW
May carry Harpoon block 2's or C-803
Better radar
Pakistani C41 installed

If the F-22p Pakistan has orderd not so good then why would pakistan order them in the first place? PN is currently thinking the long term that is why where making large procurements take for example

Harpoon block 2 orders
F-22p
Elli class
4 modern corvettes
4 More modern frigates
5 more subs
2-3 agosta's likely
11 Chinese ASW heli's
etc...

.
For those who think that F-22p's wheren't designed PN specific then here's some proof
