Haven't been following much recently, but aren't these the seats that PTI vacated? If it had won these seats back in 2018, winning again doesn't show that other parties are any weaker. It just shows that PTI could still win the seats it won in 2018. The true test would be whether it could win seats that other parties won in 2018 with evenly matched candidates (not just IK) standing against each other.

What am I missing?

I hope the PTI has an ombudsman for each and every constituency of the nation, especially those where they are not expected to win. They need a plan to do surprise victories in these entrenched opposition strongholds to swing through other areas and consolidate a mandate, not just in number of seats but in difference of the “popular vote” between them and the entire “PDM” combined.

If they are to pick up as many seats as possible, they need to be intricately aware of local concerns and the political vulnerabilities of local opposition candidates. They also need to formulate plans to sustainable finance what they promise, so that when they do come to power they can implement their promises ASAP. It’s all well and good to ask for austerity, but information to target relief efforts for the most needy (and expanding it as the economic situation improves) can go along way to gaining and growing support.

You are missing everything.
This time PTI contested against all the combined opposition (PDM) who fought under single contestant. P.S. these seats were cherry picked by PDM for bi elections as margin of PTI victory on these seats in 2018 were pretty less. Mostly under 1500 votes. Lastly, there were 3 Punjab assembly seats as well which belonged to PMLN after 2018 general elections. PTI captured 2 out of those 3 PMLN seats in their bucket thus further consolidating their position in Punjab where at the moment, PTI and PMLQ alliance had just 8 or 9 seats cushion before yesterday.

Malir NA 237 was rigged with Badmashi from PPP goons. And from NaMaloom afraad, about 80 of this Malir seat is rural Karachi, and still there can't be so much difference in the electorate when PTI was winning all over Karachi.

Let's see if the PTI protest for a re-election and ECP agree to it, this is unlikely.
